Abstract The response of a sampling total absorption counter (STAC) to protons, neutrons, pions, and electrons with incident energies up to 60 GeV is described. A good linearity was observed, and for protons a resolution of ±6% at 60 GeV/ c could be achieved. The absolute fwhm rises slowly with energy from 4.5 GeV/ c at 10 GeV/ c to 7.2 GeV/ c at 60 GeV/ c . The fraction of the energy deposited in the scintillator by incident π + and e + is on the average 9% and 50% higher than that deposited by protons.

Abstract The neutron-proton elastic differential cross section has been measured for incident momenta between 10 and 70 GeV/c and for values of the momentum transfer squared between 0.1 and 2.8 (GeV/c) 2 . The forward peak and the break at about ∣ t ∣ = 1 (GeV/ c ) 2 are very similar to corresponding pp data.

Abstract Inclusive ϱ 0 production has been investigated in p p reactions at 22.4 GeV/ c . The total cross section for ϱ 0 production is 8.1 ± 2.0 mb. The average ϱ 0 s per event is 0.17 ± 0.03. The average transverse momentum, as obtained by extrapolation of a fitted simple exponential to the p T 2 distribution, is 0.52 ± 0.12 GeV/ c . The Feynman x and c.m. rapidity distributions show ϱ 0 to be “centrally” produced.

Abstract The differential cross sections for neutron-proton elastic charge-exchange scattering have been measured with a two-arm technique for incident neutron momenta between 22 and 65 GeV/ c and for values of the momentum transfer squared between 0.002 and 0.8 (GeV/ c ) 2 . The sharp forward peak observed previously at lower energies is also present at momenta up to 65 GeV/ c ; however the s dependence of the cross section is slowing down.

Abstract The connection between particle production in antiproton-proton annihilation and non-diffractive proton-proton processes is discussed in the framework of the dual unitarization scheme. We calculate relative multiplicity moments for antiproton-proton annihilation using the moments of non-diffractive proton-proton interactions and find good agreement with experimental annihilation data.

The diffraction dissociation reaction n + p → (pπ−) + p was studied at the Serpukhov accelerator neutron beam in the momentum range 35–65 GeV/c in an electronics experiment. The differential cross sections of the reaction are analysed and presented in the five-dimensional phase space (pn, m∗, t, cosθ∗, φ∗). The backward peak observed in the distribution over if cosθin GJ ∗ in the Gottfried-Jackson frame of if(pπ) is interpreted as a baryon-exchange effect. The angular distribution of the (pπ−) system is compared with Deck-type models.

Kuratashvili; T. P. Topuriya; V. D. Tsintsadze

The Bose-Einstein interference effect is studied using 7333 events of ¯pp-interactions withnch≧6 at 22·4 GeV/c. An essential dependence of the strength of this effect on the pion pair velocity is observed. An indication is obtained that processes with essentially different time characteristics (τ<1 fm and τ>2 fm) contribute to ¯pp-interactions at 22·4 GeV/c. The interpretation based on abundant resonance production in high energy collisions is discussed.

Abstract The inclusive and semi-inclusive production of Δ ++ (1236) is investigated in p p interactions at 22.4 GeV/ c . The Δ ++ cross section is 1.78 ± 0.18 mb in the region of | t p Δ | ⩽ 0.74 (GeV/ c ) 2 . The differential cross section has been studied as a function of transverse and longitudinal variables. Evidence for the one-pion exchange contribution to the Δ ++ inclusive process has been obtained from the decay angular distributions of the Δ ++ .
