The chemical constituents of AustralianZanthoxylumspecies. IV. Two new coumarins fromZ. suberosumC. T. White (syn.Z. dominianumMerr. & Perry;Z. ovalifoliumWight)

Gb Guise; E Ritchie; Rg Senior; Wc Taylor

The bark of Zanthoxylum dominianum Merr. & Perry gave suberosin and canthin-6-one in about the same high yields that were previously reported from Z. suberosum C. T. White. The result confirms the previous work and supports the recently expressed view that the names are synonymous. Minor constituents isolated were palmitic acid, ?sitosterol?, β- amyrin, isopimpinellin, 7-methoxycoumarin-6-aldehyde, and two new coumarins, ?suberenol? and ?cyclobisuberodiene?. The structure of suberenol has been established as (X), and evidence in favour of (XXI) as the structure of cyclobisuberodiene obtained.

The chemical constituents of Australian Flindersia species. XI The structures of maculosidine and maculosine, two alkaloids from F. maculosa Lindl.

Rh Prager; E Ritchie; Wc Taylor

Maculosidine has the structure I, previously suggested. By degradation it is converted to 6,8-dimethoxy-3-ethyl-4-hydroxy-2-quinolone, identified by synthesis. Maculosine, which has formula C17H1706N and the typical ultraviolet spectrum of a furoquinoline, is oxidized by periodate to a substance which is degraded to the known 3-ethyl-4-hydroxy-6,7-methylenedioxy-2-quinolone. This evidence leads to the assignment of IV as its structure.

The Chemical Constituents of AustralianFlindersiaSpecies. XIV. The Constituents ofFlindersia pubescensBail. andF. schottianaF. Muell

Af Hollis; Rh Prager; E Ritchie; Wc Taylor

The alkaloids and other constituents of Flindersia pubescens Bail. and F. schottiana F. Muell. have been isolated. From F. schottiana has been obtained osthol hydro- ohloride and chemical work on its genesis is described. Several substances related to osthol are reported for the first time.
