The aim of this work was to compare weight and length adaptations of the soleus muscle of male Wistar rats as well as estimation of the total number of serial sarcomere and mean sarcomere length, when they are submitted to remobilization on treadmill. 18 Wistar male rats were used and divided in the three following groups: CG - left soleus (LS) muscle immobilized and remobilized free in the cage; G10 - LS muscle immobilized and remobilized in speed of 10 m/min on treadmill; and G12 - LS muscle immobilized and remobilized in speed of 12 m/min. The right muscles (RS) of each animal were used for comparison. The results showed the following variations, muscular weigh: CG -22.35% (p = 0.0089), G10 -12.52% (p = 0.0623), G12 -12.07%, (p = 0.0004); muscle length: CG -5.47% (p = 0.0120), G10 -3.31% (p = 0.2868), G12 0.41% (p = 0.8987); estimation of number of serial sarcomere: CG -15.42% (p = 0.0047), G10 -10.87% (p = 0.0193), G12 -4.97 (p = 0.2409); sarcomere length: CG 11.16%, (p = 0.0142), G10 9.31% (p = 0.1270), G12 5.58% (p = 0.1327). It was concluded that G12 presented the best effectiveness after immobilization period since it presented greater similarity with the non-immobilized soleus.

Muscle fibers have great plastic properties, responding to different stimuli with their weight increase or reduction, length and serial sarcomere number. The aim of this study was to analyze the static passive stretching in 3 daily bouts of 30 s and the free remobilization effects for two weeks, in the soleus muscle of rats immobilized in shortening position. For this purpose, 12 rats (Wistar) were used and divided in 2 groups: G1 (n=6) - left soleus muscle (LSM) immobilized and free in the cage (GIF); G2 (n=6) - LSM immobilized and stretched daily (GIS). The variations found between the LSM and RSM (right) of each group have been compared. The variables were: soleus muscle weight, length, serial sarcomeres number and sarcomere length. The results comparing LSM with RSM were: muscle weight: GIF=-23.16%, (p=0.0007), GIS-32.43% (p=0.0008); muscle length: GIF=-5.47% (p=0.0120); GIS=-9.99% (p=0.0034); serial sarcomere number: GIF=-15.42% (p=0.0047); GIS=-8.08% (p=0.0008); sarcomere length: GIF=11.16% (p=0.0142); GIS=-1.92% (p=0.3783). It can be concluded through these results that neither the stretching nor the free remobilization promotes restoration in the skeletal muscles structure submitted to prolonged immobilization.

The therapeutic efficiency of ultrasound has become an indispensable tool of physical therapy treatment in cases of alteration by lesions and in many kinds of sickness. However, in pediatric cases the use of ultrasound is controversial due to possible disturbance and damage to the growth plate. The aim of this study is to find out if the continuous ultrasound presents alteration effects on the growth plate of female rabbits. Eight New Zealand female rabbits with two months of age were tested. They were treated by continuous therapeutic ultrasound with doses of 1 W/cm2 in the lateral region of the right knee joint for five minutes, during 10 days, with an interval of two days after five applications. The left knee joint was used as a control. The histological analysis showed an alteration in the thickness of the growth plate on the treated side 24.40% bigger than in the left knee joint of the control (p < 0.0001). On other hand, the radiological analysis did not show any difference between the limbs. The conclusion was that the therapeutic ultrasound produced significant histological alterations in the cartilage thickness on the treated side according to the manner it was used in the experiment. Such fact suggests an acceleration in the growth plate metabolism.
