Interspecific behaviour between Callithrix jacchus (Linnaeus) (Callitrichidae, Primates) and some birds of the Atlantic forest, Pernanbuco State, Brazil

Rachel M. de Lyra-Neves; Maria Adélia Borstelmann de Oliveira; Wallace Rodrigues Telino-Júnior; Ednilza Maranhão dos Santos

The observations cover a period of two years, monitoring groups of marked common marmosets in eight hour/day periods. Six types of events were recorded: marmoset predation; bird predation; foraging competition; food sharing; use of avian nest for nocturnal marmoset rest and mutual pursuit. All pooled events showed highly significant differences between season and vegetation strata.

This paper describes the tadpole and advertisement call of Phyllodytes acuminatus, based on specimens from the Parque Nacional do Catimbau, in the municipality of Buíque, State of Pernambuco, Northeastern Brazil. The overall morphology of P. acuminatus tadpole is similar to that of most species of the genus. The presence of a double row of marginal papillae surrounding all the oral apparatus (except on most of the upper labium which has a dorsal gap) was a characteristic that differentiate P. acuminatus from the other species of the genus. Furthermore, the call structure of the species (unpulsed notes with harmonic structure) fits it in the group composed of P. kautskyi and P. melanomystax.

Studies on occupation, spatial distribution and seasonal are of paramount importance to understand the interrelationships between individuals and species in a fauna community. This study the objectives were to provide information regarding the occupation spatial, distribution and seasonality of amphibians from Parque Estadual Dois Irmaos (PEDI), and analyzing the wealth, constancy of occurrence, similarity and correlation with abiotic parameters. The collections occurred between March 2011 and September 2012 with a duration of eight hours per week on daytime and nighttime hours, through active search in three areas (A1 Buildings, A2 Forest and A3 Watershed). The effort resulted in a list of 30 species distributed among four families:, Bufonidae (n = 3), Craugastoridae (n = 2), Hylidae (n = 18), and Leptodactylidae (n = 7), totaling 40 species to the area. Four species were considered constant, seven accessory and 20 accidental. The increased wealth went to A1 with 41% species. The areas A1 and A3 were found greater similarity between themselves (55), they function as a ecotono between open and forested areas. The months with the rain got greater wealth. It is concluded that the building area and the rainy months showed a greater number of species. The richness of species to the PEDE is representative, represents 28,1% to Pernambuco and 4,04% to Brazil. It appears that the PEDI is very rich of frogs when compared to other localities for Pernambuco.

Animals run over on roads and highways have been drawing attention of researchers to investigate the actual impact of the loss of these animals to the environment. The roads are among the environmental changes that caused the most impacts on natural landscapes, with physical, chemical, biological and ecological effects. The present study aimed to list the amphibians and reptiles trampled on the BR-232 highway, the stretch between the towns of Sierra Fishing Hewn. The route was traveled during the years 2009-2011, on average vehicle speed between 40 and 60 km / hour. Animals sighted were photographed and identified when possible. Of the 13 stations and a total of 89 individuals distributed among 24 species of amphibians (n = 2) and reptiles (n = 22) were recorded during this period. Species with highest registration numbers were the anuran amphibian Rhinella jimi (n = 14), and snakes Boiruna hinterland (n = 14) and Boa constrictor (n = 12). The stretches between the towns of Fishing-Arcoverde and Custody-Carved Sierra were those who had a greater number of occurrences, possibly due to the area of Caatinga scrub and trees found along this route. This work highlights the need for environmental mitigation actions in this passage, aimed at reducing the number of pedestrian accidents.
