The OK-4/Duke storage ring FEL was commissioned in November 1996 and demonstrated lasing in the near UV and visible ranges (345 - 413 nm). The OK-4 is the first storage ring FEL with the shortest wavelength and highest power for UV FELs operating in the United States. During one month of operation we have performed preliminary measurements of the main parameters of the OK-4 FEL: its gain, lasing power and temporal structure. In addition to lasing, the OK-4/Duke FEL generated a nearly monochromatic (1% FWHM) 12.2 MeV gamma-ray beam. In this paper we describe the design and initial performance of the OK-4/Duke storage ring FEL. We compare our predictions with lasing results. Our attempt to lase in the deep UV range (around 193 nm) is discussed. The OK-4 diagnostic systems and performance of its optical cavity are briefly described.

Recently a new generation of picosecond dissectors were created on the basis of the PIF-01/S1 picosecond streak-image tube designed and manufactured at the GPI Photoelectronics Department. The results of the measurements of instrument characteristics of the new dissector, which were carried out in the static mode, showed that temporal resolution of the dissector can be better than 3-4 ps (FWHM). The results of temporal resolution calibration of the new-generation picosecond dissector carried out at the specialized set-up based on a femtosecond Ti:sapphire laser are given in this work.

The OK-4 is the first storage ring FEL operating in the United States. It was commissioned in November, 1996 and demonstrated lasing in the near UV and visible ranges (345-413 nm) with extracted power of 0.15 W. In addition to lasing, the OK-4/Duke FEL generated a nearly monochromatic (1% FWHM) /spl gamma/-ray beam. In this paper we describe the initial performance of the OK-4/Duke storage ring FEL and /spl gamma/-ray source.

A dissector is an electron-optical device designed for measurement of periodic light pulses of subnanosecond and picosecond duration. LI-602 dissector developed at Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics (BINP SB RAS) is widely used for routine measurements of a longitudinal profile of electron and positron beams at BINP electron-positron colliders and other similar installations(1,2). LI-602 dissector is a part of many optical diagnostic systems and provides temporal resolution of about 20 ps. Recently a new generation of picosecond dissectors were created on the basis of the PIF- 01/S1 picosecond streak-image tube designed and manufactured at the A.M.Prokhorov General Physics Institute (GPI) Photoelectronics Department(3,4). The results of the measurements of instrument function of the new dissector based on PIF-01/S1, which were carried out in the static mode(5) showed that temporal resolution of the dissector can be better than 3-4 ps (FWHM). The results of temporal resolution calibration of the new-generation picosecond dissector carried out at the specialized set-up based on a femtosecond Ti:sapphire laser and recent results of longitudinal beam profile measurements at BINP damping ring are given in this work.

A new station for optical observation of electron beam parameters at the electron storage ring SIBERIA-2 is dedicated for measurement of the transverse and longitudinal size of electron bunches with the use of the synchrotron radiation (SR) visible spectrum in single-bunch and multi-bunch modes and for study of time-dependent behavior of individual electron bunches with changing accelerator parameters. The article briefly describes the main components of the diagnostics and the experimental results.

The paper is dedicated to a new station for optical observation of electron beam parameters which was built at the synchrotron radiation (SR) storage ring SIBERIA-2 at Kurchatov Institute. The station serves for the automatic measurement of electron bunches transverse and longitudinal sizes with the use of SR visible spectrum in one-bunch and multi-bunch modes.
