Home at last: the enigmatic genera Eriachaenium and Adenocaulon (Compositae, Mutisioideae, Mutisieae, Adenocaulinae)

Vicki A. Funk; Eduardo Pasini; J. Mauricio Bonifacino; Liliana Katinas

Abstract The genera Eriachaenium and Adenocaulon (Compositae) have distinct but complex histories and both have been placed in a number of tribes across the family. For the first time the two genera are included in a molecular study and the results show that they are best placed in the tribe Mutisieae s.s. and are the only genera in the re-instated subtribe Adenocaulinae. When described, this subtribe contained only Adenocaulon and was found in the Inuleae. The study also confirms one of the conclusions of a recent morphological study that Eriachaenium and Adenocaulon are sister taxa. Past difficulties in tribal assignment are attributed to the distinct and unusual morphology of each genus. Both genera and the subtribe are described and a key to separate the genera is provided.

Eduardo Pasini; Liliana Katinas; Mara Rejane Ritter

The genus Chaptalia (Asteraceae, Mutisieae) in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil Abstract The genus Chaptalia is represented by ca. 70 species, from northern United States to the center of Argentina; in Brazil there are 17 species. Among the recognizable features of the genus are trimorphic florets, herbaceous habit and florets without staminodes. The present work aimed to survey the native species of Chaptalia in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. The occurrence of 10 species in the State is confirmed: C. arechavaletae , C. cordifolia , C. exscapa , C. graminifolia , C. ignota , C. integerrima , C. mandonii , C. nutans , C. piloselloides e C. runcinata . Chaptalia sinuata is placed by first time as a synonym of C. integerrima . The study presents species descriptions, an identification key, illustrations, conservation data and general information.

Typifications in the genus Trichocline (Asteraceae: Mutisieae)

Eduardo Pasini; Liliana Katinas

Abstract: Concerning the genus Trichocline (Asteraceae: Mutisieae), a neotype is designated for the name Bichenia aurea (≡ T. aurea) and lectotypes are designated for the names Onoseris heterophylla (≡ T. heterophylla), T. humilis and T. linearifolia. Nomenclatural and taxonomic information and IUCN conservation status assessments are given for the four species T. aurea, T. heterophylla, T. humilis and T. linearifolia. In addition, a new record of T. heterophylla for Argentina is reported. Taxonomic and ecological aspects of Myrceugenia mesomischa (Myrtaceae), an endemic tree from southern Brazil

Robberson Bernal Setubal; Martin Grings; Eduardo Pasini; Guilherme Dubal dos Santos Seger

Myrceugenia mesomischa (Burret) D. Legrand & Kausel (Myrtaceae), a tree species poorly cited in floristic and phytosociological surveys in its area of known occurrence, was recorded as one of the species with the highest importance value in a fragment of Araucaria forest in Sao Francisco de Paula municipality, Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil. The species was abundant in the understory strata of the forest, showing the highest frequency and density of the survey. Considering the paucity of data on the species, its degree of rarity and endemism (occurring only in the states of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina, Brazil), more studies are needed to evaluate the true current state of conservation of populations of this species.
