Exploring the Meaning African American Students Ascribe to Their Participation in High School Career Academies and the Challenges They Experience.

Despite the historical mission of career academies to expand opportunities and engagement of minority students, particularly African American students, more recent curricular changes in the career academy model have increased the rigor of these types of programs. These new initiatives have undoubtedly resulted in a demographic shift with more White and Asian students participating in career academies while African American and Hispanic student enrollment is drastically decreasing. To that end, the purpose of this study was to explore the meaning African American students ascribed to their participation (or lack thereof) in career academies and the challenges they encountered. As such, the experiences of 15 African American high school students were explored using a phenomenological approach. The following themes were revealed: (a) Preparation for the Next Level; (b) Less Time for School Activities; (c) Not Just Going Through the Motions; and (d) An Unrealized Connection with Core Academic Subjects. Implications for administrators, guidance counselors, parents, and teachers are articulated.

What is CTE?: Practitioners Struggle to Define Their Field in the United States

The purpose of this phenomenological study was to capture the perspectives of 13 masters’ students, who are also practitioners in Career and Technical Education (CTE), regarding how they conceive of the field. A few recurring themes emerged: (a) transitional identity as the field tries to distance itself from the stigma of vocational education; (b) purpose of CTE reflecting the tension between narrow and broad preparation for work; and (c) perspectives on new directions in the field viewing CTE as an integral component of education for all students aligned with calls for more rigorous integration of academic and CTE. Curricular recommendations for CTE graduate programs are articulated, including implications to develop coherent and shared consensus regarding the purpose and mission of the field to provide programmatic direction and vision.

Exploring the Preparedness of Business Education Teacher Candidates for their Internships: The Perspectives of Mentor Teachers

Applying a modified-Delphi technique, this research study sought consensus from business education mentor teachers regarding the top three areas in which business education student teachers were prepared as well as underprepared for their roles as teachers. Further, the mentor teachers provided recommendations for business education teacher preparation programs to implement to better prepare their teacher candidates for the student teaching internship. To that end, the mentor teachers did not gain consensus on the top three areas their student teachers were most prepared. However, they did agree classroom management and working with special needs’ students were among the top three areas their student teachers were least prepared. The mentor teachers agreed business education teacher preparation programs could provide more experiences with classroom management in public schools and provide their teacher candidates with more information about the workload and commitment needed to be effective teachers.

Bridging Technical Skills Gaps between High School Students and Local Employers

The purpose of this study was to explore how technical skills taught and learned in Florida engineering and engineering technology-themed career academies fit technical skills desired by local employers in technology and manufacturing. The analysis utilized the narratives of 70 students and four teachers from career academies at four high schools and 27 industry leaders from the same geographical region of Florida. Data interpretation led to understanding that employers expressed an urgent need for technical skills using appropriate equipment and technologies, teachers were teaching students technical skills by simulating the real-world work environment, and students valued their abilities to transform their classroom project ideas into tangible products.

Promoting Active and Sustained School-Business Partnerships: An Exploratory Case Study of an IT Academy

In support of the national push for promoting career readiness, school-business partnerships have been noted as an important support strategy. However, there is limited research in the context of career academies. Thus, we sought to explore the nature of a partnership between an information technology (IT) career academy and local business partners. We found that the development of social capital is required to keep the network of partners bonded toward a common goal, bridged through a Business Advisory Council to facilitate planning and related supports, and linked by a local web of connecting relationships. Study findings add to the limited literature on the interface of school-business partnerships, career academies, and the promotion of career readiness in particular occupational contexts such as IT.

A Longitudinal Analysis of Young Adult Pathways to STEMH Occupations.

In this study, we determined the educational pathways and key life course transitions of young adults who enter Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Health (STEMH) technician and professional jobs using the 1997 National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (NLSY) dataset, tracking high school students from 1997 to adulthood in 2009. Using hierarchical linear modeling (HLM), findings underscored gender, ethnic and racial background, high school achievement and career and technical education (CTE) participation, earning high school industry certifications, postsecondary enrollment (2 year and 4 year), and degree attainment as factors contributing to the attainment of STEMH technician and professional careers. In light of the findings, we recommend that strategies to broaden the participation of minorities and women in STEMH fields include strengthening high school CTE programs and emphasizing career guidance in high schools to promote career awareness as a means to attract and retain students in STEMH pathways.

How Field Experiences Influence Perceptions of Learning to Teach in a Precollegiate Urban Teaching Academy Program

ABSTRACT This qualitative, multicase study examined the support, instruction, coursework, discussions, field and clinical experiences, and critical reflection that took place within a precollegiate Urban Teaching Academy (UTA) magnet program located in a southeastern school district. Two major themes emerged with sub-themes undergirding each. The first theme of disparate program-based experiences highlighted the three unique structures each teacher implemented to expose their students to the realities of teaching, which included their emphasis—or lack thereof—on coursework and field and clinical experiences. The second theme of student reactions to their learning experiences expressed the three differentiated curricular experiences students encountered. Data interpretations confirmed the importance of using book work, instruction, discussions, and critical reflection regarding classroom events as scaffolding to support the preparation of future teachers within the context of urban field and clinical experiences through precollegiate pipeline programs.
