ENOI s AIR EMBOLISM is a recognized V complication of various surgical, diagnostic, and therapeutic procedures.*o2 Of these, occipital craniectomy on a patient in the sitting position is known to be particularly haz:irdous3 because of exposure of noncollapsible venous channels (dural sinuses and diploic veins) which, if opened in the presence of a negative venous pressure, will aspirate giir. Our experience with this complication has resulted in the recent application of a new method of treatment which will be described in detail. In addition, this report will summarize our experience, during 4 years (March 1961 to March 1965), with venous air embolism occurring during all neurosurgical procedures performed on patients in the sitting position.
