Improving science instruction for gifted high school students

Information from a variety of current projects report that there is a crisis in science education. Student performance in science and mathematics continues to slide downward. The present conditions that characterize science education do not lend themselves to developing the personal traits characteristic of creative scientists. A “mentor” type enrichment program addresses such shortcomings by (a) providing first‐hand experience in research laboratories, (b) challenging participants in an experimental research environment, (c) supplementing high school science with actual experiences and (d) enhancing the development of personal traits that characterize creative scientists.
