The present study investigated Chi Sigma Iota (CSI) chapter presidents’ use of CSI’s Principles and Practices of Leadership Excellence (PPLE). Fifty CSI chapter presidents completed a survey that assessed their experience with, perceived competence in, and rankings of importance of the PPLEs. Participants also reported on their involvement in leadership activities and training. Implications for professional counselor leadership training and for future research are discussed.

The current study identified psychosocial variables associated with AUDIT-C hazardous drinking risk status for male and female college students. Logistic regression analysis revealed that AUDIT-C risk status was associated with alcohol-related negative consequences, injunctive norms, and descriptive norms for both male and female participants. Sociability and self-perception outcome expectancies predicted risk status for females. Cognitive and behavioral impairment expectancies predicted risk status for men in the sample. Implications for screening and brief intervention programming efforts are discussed.

ABSTRACT The authors used content analysis to explore the application of CSI’s Principles and Practices of Leadership Excellence (PPLE) to CSI chapter leadership through the voices of chapter leaders. With a sample of 50 student leaders, the authors found that CSI chapter leaders engage in behaviors consistent with the PPLE, albeit inconsistently. Implications for research and practice, including emphasis on intentional training to foster leadership excellence, are discussed.

Reports on the behavioral health workforce highlight the need to enhance evidence-based capacity; evidence-based interventions incorporated into pre-service graduate curricula (coursework and fieldwork) are needed to meet this goal. Improving educational practices across pre-service settings will require understanding of and careful attention to the contextual factors that exert pressure on curricula. The authors believe efforts to change educational practices can be enhanced by application of implementation science principles. This Open Forum delineates the key contextual factors that influence pre-service education, highlights gaps in the literature, and proposes an agenda for future research at the intersection of behavioral health workforce development and implementation science.

ABSTRACT Counselor leadership is vital to advancing the counseling profession. The Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs has required leadership development as part of counselor training; however, little is known about how leadership skills are acquired in counselor preparation. Based on a content analysis of data from 136 Chi Sigma Iota chapters, leadership skill building efforts were identified. Implications for training and research are provided.
The Professional Counselor | 2017

This content analysis includes 210 articles that focused on addictions topics published between January 2005 and December 2014 in the journals of the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC), Chi Sigma Iota (CSI), the American Counseling Association (ACA), and ACA member divisions. Results include the types of addictions content and behaviors studied as well as the populations and data analytic techniques used in the addictions research articles. Whereas most articles discussed addictions counseling techniques, addictions issues among non-clinical populations, and professional practice issues, fewer articles addressed clients in treatment, utilized clinical populations, or analyzed intervention outcomes. Implications for addictive behaviors and addictions counseling scholarship in professional counseling are discussed.

Participants included 483 undergraduate drinkers who were assessed on drinking motives and alcohol behaviors. Results indicated differences in coping drinking motives and alcohol-related negative consequences between first-generation college students (FGCS) and continuing generation college students (CGCS) status depended on sex. Implications for prevention and intervention efforts with FGCS are discussed.
