This article is a description of data related to the research article entitled “Factors influencing e-Procurement adoption in the Nigerian Building Industry” (Ibem et al., 2016) [1]. The data were derived via a questionnaire survey involving 213 participants comprising architects, quantity surveyors, builders, construction/project managers, and engineers working in consulting and contracting firms, private client organisations and government agencies. The survey was conducted in Nigeria between June and November 2015. The data set contains responses on the levels of awareness and extent of use of the different e-Procurement technologies, the barriers to the uptake as well as the factors influencing e-Procurement adoption by organizations in the Nigerian building industry. The survey data and results of the analysis are made available in this article for further use by researchers; and for the purpose of improving understanding of the key findings of the survey.

e-Procurement adoption in the Nigerian building industry: Architects’ perspective

Eziyi O. Ibem; Egidario B. Aduwo; Emmanuel A. Ayo-Vaughan

e-Procurement adoption by architects in the Nigerian building industry was investigated using data derived via a questionnaire survey of 75 architects in consulting and contracting firms, government and clients’ organizations. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson product-moment correlation and content analyses, and the results reveal that most of the organizations employing architects were not using e-Procurement. However, the very few adopters identified used e-mails and websites in communicating, exchanging project information, and sourcing for building services, materials and equipment. The key barriers to the uptake of e-Procurement among architects in the survey were unreliable power supply, low level of awareness among people; and the lack of forum to exchange ideas on e- Procurement use. The paper emphasized the need to address these challenges to ensure a critical mass uptake of e-Procurement by architects in Nigeria.

This article describes the data associated with the research paper entitled “Subjective life satisfaction in public housing in urban areas of Ogun State” by Ibem and Amole (2013). A multistage sampling technique and questionnaire were used to extract data from occupants in 517 dwelling units in ten selected government mass housing schemes located in five urban centers in Ogun State, Nigeria. The dataset has 57 different variables describing households’ demographics, dwelling units’ features, supply of basic services, and neighbourhood environment in the residential estates. In addition, it also contains variables used to assess residential satisfaction and satisfaction with life. The Statistical Package of the Social Sciences (SPSS) file, descriptive statistics for all the variables and questionnaire used to derive the data are provided in this article. The dataset will enhance understanding of the main research findings and conclusions.

Architecture as a profession is a multifaceted field that requires extensive knowledge in various fields. An architect must know about structural engineering, plumbing, electrical works, environmental science, and human psychology, etc. Most of these subjects are taught as a part of many architectural programs, but how much of the practical aspects are knows? Will the average architectural graduate know how floor tiles are laid? How to market themselves? How to manage labourers and other professionals? Architects are known for excelling during design and floundering with business and management aspects that follow after the design. The business and management aspects of architecture require practical skills. The design aspect is emphasized in schools because it is the base of the Architect. However an architect’s work will only be about 20% design. Management takes the other 80% of the architects work and will require practical skill in order to execute and lead construction works effectively. This research attempts to see the extent to which students of architecture are being involved in practical training, to evaluate the practical skills they are acquiring. It also aims at discovering what is lacking in the department of architecture, in the focus institutions, to enhance the education of architectural students, and to better prepare them for the practical aspect of architecture. To get the desired data for this research, questionnaires were distributed to students in different Universities. The curriculum of different universities were also used. Interviews with architecture students at varying levels will also be conducted to see the depth comprehensiveness and effectiveness of any implemented practical training. The results from this research will be valuable to educators as they draw up curriculums for their departments. They will have a resource to guide them as they try to design and mold the education of their students.
