We have developed a TOTE/spl trade/ technique for evaluation of the full capacity performance of DWDM systems without need for full terminal equipment. The presented TOTE/spl trade/ design works independently of the system bandwidth and channel spacing and is thus very attractive for performance evaluation of installed DWDM systems. In a 28 nm, transatlantic DWDM field transmission experiment, the presented TOTE/spl trade/ design is verified to accurately measure the same gain shape and performance as the fully loaded transmitter.

Spectral hole burning simulation and experimental verification in long-haul WDM systems

Alexei N. Pilipetskii; Stuart M. Abbott; Dmitriy Kovsh; Massimo Manna; Ekaterina A. Golovchenko; Morten Nissov; Will Patterson; B. Bakhshi; M. Vaa

The effect of spectral hole burning on long-haul WDM systems was simulated and measured on installed transatlantic link. Changes in end-to-end system gain versus number and wavelength of channels were evaluated. Modeling results are in good agreement with experimental data.

Advantages of orthogonal polarization launch in a 6,500 km straight-line DWDM transmission experiment

B. Bakhshi; D. Duff; Li Liu; Ekaterina A. Golovchenko; Alexei N. Pilipetskii; K. Razavi; D. Sliwinski; Alan J. Lucero; M. Arend; M. Vaa; William W. Patterson

We have presented a comparison of orthogonal and parallel polarization launch in a straight-line transatlantic DWDM transmission experiment. We observed more than 1 dB of Q-factor improvement when employing orthogonal launch. Our experimental results agree well with our simulator predictions.

Impact of fiber aging and cable repair in an installed 28-nm transatlantic 96 x 10 Gb/s DWDM system

B. Bakshi; Lutfur Rahman; G. Mohs; M. Vaa; Will Patterson; Jin-Xing Cai; A. Lucero; Ekaterina A. Golovchenko; Stuart M. Abbott

Using the 28-nm bandwidth, transatlantic segment of the Tyco Global Networkreg, we present the first report of the impact of fiber aging and cable repairs on gain shape and performance of an installed transoceanic DWDM system

Impact of Polarization Hole Burning in Lightly Loaded Ultra Long-Haul WDM Systems

Bamdad Bakhshi; Lutfur Rahman; Ekaterina A. Golovchenko

In lightly loaded ultra-long WDM systems, which use idlers for power management, we show experimentally that a higher inline EDFA output power can significantly reduce the PHB-induced performance fluctuations, with enhanced system margin in result.
