Abstract It has been found that certain insecticides, rodenticides, herbicides and fungicides on solid state supports give fluorescence when sprayed with solutions containing 2-diphenylacetyl-1,3-indandione-1-imine derivatives. Compounds that give high fluorescence include DDT, Chlordane, Heptachlor, Toxaphene, Methoxychlor, Diazinon, Carbophenothion, DDVP, Warfarin, phenoxyacetic acid, methyl l-naphthaleneacetate, Chloranil, Dichlone, and 1,4,5,6,7,7-hexachloro-N-(ethylmercuri)-5-norbornene-2,3-dicarboximide. The effect is based on fluorescence enhancement of the 2-diphenylacetyl-1,3-indandione-l-imine derivatives as a result of molecular complexation with the compound detected.

Abstract A simple, specific, and direct test for α-hydroxy acid esters is described. It is based on enhancing the fluorescence of 2-diphenylacetyl-1, 3-indandione-1-imine derivatives through molecular complexes with the α-hydroxy acid esters in the solid state.

Abstract A specific and non-destructive test for basic esters of benzilic and α-glycolic acids in water is described. The compounds are collected on a glass fiber filter as water insoluble complexes with sodium tetraphenylboron. The filter is dried and sprayed with a 2-diphenylacetyl-l, 3-indandione-l-imine derivative. A positive test is the visual observation of fluorescence.

Abstract A multicyclic catalytic scheme for the vapor detection of the organophosphorus compound isopropyl methylphosphonofluoridate, GB, is described. A detector tube containing silica gel impregnated with 1-phenyl-1,2,3-butanetrione 2-oxime, o-dinitrobenzene, and p-nitrobenzaldehyde detected 0.12 and 0.3 μg of GB in 5 and 3 minutes, respectively.

Abstract N-Alkylformamides are shown to be useful in the detection of electrophiles by the formation of isocyanides. Down to 0.2 μ of tosyl chloride is detectable by combining the formamide dehydra...
