Transdisciplinarity - A New Vision in Forming Specialists in the Field of Environmental Engineering - Case Study

Olimpia Ghermec; Elena Gavrilescu; Christian Ghermec

The complexity of industrial activities, the requests regarding the integrated pollution prevention and control, the development of the eco-design, the growth of the environmental performance and of the energetic efficiency, all of these need specialists trained in Universities, in the field of environmental engineering. The field of study of Environmental Engineering is considered both multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary. In the paper it is shown the necessity of a new approach of this field through transdisciplinarity. The case study refers to the relation between transdisciplinarity and the systems of renewable energy.

Research on Terrestrial Sequestration of Carbon Dioxide Potential from Anthropogenic Sources in Mehedinti County

Christian Ghermec; Olimpia Ghermec; Elena Gavrilescu

The carbon cycle is quantitatively altered by the anthropogenic activities, especially by the carbon dioxide emissions. The soil has a fundamental role in this circuit, due the fact that, on the one side, it deposits the organic and non-organic carbon and on the other side, it holds the vegetation, which, through photosynthesis process, extracts carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and transforms it in organic matter. Therefore, the role of the soil in terrestrial sequestration is acknowledged. In this paper it is analyzed the terrestrial carbon sequestration potential in Mehedinţi County (Romania).

Structural and Hydro Technical Schemes for Flood Defenses

Elena Gavrilescu; Gilda Diana Buzatu

Area flooding is the main parameter necessary to achieve hydro technical defense schemes. This can be determined based on calculations performed in various programs. Of the many measures to limit the risk of flooding were chosen for comparison hydrotechnical for protection against floods schemes: embankment and building a polder area. Finally it is noted that structural measures are widely promoted because of the benefits arising from economically and ecologically necessary but complementary structural measures are the only high efficiency in cases with high abundant torrential floods. Today hydro technical schemes are a techno-economic and environmental compromise with fluctuating boundaries, making the decision to be very heavy, plus taking into consideration the temporal variability and the aspect of economy and nature. The optimal solution is specific to each river basin and establishing its methods are different, many of which are listed in this paper.

Study of the Emissions from the Fuel Distribution Stations in Drobeta Turnu Severin

Ionela Gabriela Bucse; Olimpia Ghermec; Elena Gavrilescu; Mariana Ciobanu

A major source of air pollution is represented by the means of transport. The largest share of gases polluting air comes from motor vehicles, mainly due to their large number. Regardless of the type of motor, vehicles pollutes air with carbon and nitrogen oxides, unburned hydrocarbons, sulphur oxides, aldehydes, plumbum, asbestos, soot, etc. But the activity of trading fuels (diesel, gasoline), lubricants, parts, accessories and auto cosmetics (which are sold in fuel sales and distribution units) is another source of environmental contamination. From this point of view we studied some gas stations located in Drobeta Turnu Severin area, the possibility of soil pollution, waste disposal, safety zone and fire security measures. Air emissions, wastewater discharge, safety and hygiene of jobs were also studied.
