Reflection and refraction at the surface of an isotropic chiral medium: eigenvalue–eigenvector solution using a 4 × 4 matrix method

Elena Georgieva

Fresnel reflection amplitude coefficients (fractional amplitudes) at the surface of an isotropic, intrinsically nonmagnetic chiral medium are derived on the basis of the Drude–Condon model of optical activity. The eigenvalue–eigenvector solution is obtained with use of Berreman’s 4 × 4 matrix method. Self-consistent results are obtained when the calculations are based on a new 4 × 4 matrix for reflection from an isotropic chiral medium.

Jones and Mueller matrices for specular reflection from a chiral medium: determination of the basic chiral parameters using the elements of the Mueller matrix and experimental configurations to measure the basic chiral parameters.

Elena Georgieva

Using Fresnel reflection amplitudes, the Jones and Mueller matrices for reflection from a nonabsorbing gyrotropic medium are presented. Some basic chiral parameters are defined by using the elements of the Mueller matrix; experimental configurations are described.

What's your poison? Impact of individual repair capacity on the outcomes of genotoxic therapies in cancer. Part II - information content and validity of biomarkers for individual repair capacity in the assessment of outcomes of anticancer therapy.

Rumena Petkova; Pavlina Chelenkova; Elena Georgieva; Stoian Chakarov

ABSTRACT The individual variance in the efficiency of repair of damage induced by genotoxic therapies may be an important factor in the assessment of eligibility for different anticancer treatments, the outcomes of various treatments and the therapy-associated complications, including acute and delayed toxicity and acquired drug resistance. The second part of this paper analyses the currently available information about the possibilities of using experimentally obtained knowledge about individual repair capacity for the purposes of personalised medicine and healthcare.

WHAT'S YOUR POISON? IMPACT OF INDIVIDUAL REPAIR CAPACITY ON THE OUTCOMES OF GENOTOXIC THERAPIES IN CANCER. PART I - ROLE OF INDIVIDUAL REPAIR CAPACITY IN THE CONSTITUTION OF RISK FOR LATE-ONSET MULTIFACTORIAL DISEASE

Rumena Petkova; Pavlina Chelenkova; Elena Georgieva; Stoian Chakarov

ABSTRACT The capacity for repair of damage in DNA may vary between clinically healthy people and in patients with different diseases and conditions, contributing to the risk for development of late-onset multifactorial disease, eligibility for different therapies and various therapy-related complications. At present, the effects of individual variance in DNA repair capacity in human disease are best studied in cancer. The first part of this paper briefly reviews the history of the field and the currently available biomarkers of individual repair capacity associated with the risk for development of cancer and other late-onset multifactorial diseases and conditions.

Method for studying the electro‐optic effect of isotropic crystals: Stokes–Mueller analysis of the method—experimental results

Elena Georgieva; Georgi T. Georgiev

A new method for studying the linear electro‐optic effect of isotropic crystals is described. Alternating voltage of low frequency is applied to the crystal, placed between a polarizer and analyzer. The direct and the alternating signals are measured at different positions of the analyzer. A Stokes–Mueller analysis of the method is given.

MEASUREMENT OF THE 2F SIGNAL OF ELECTROGYRATION IN CENTROSYMMETRIC CRYSTALS

Elena Georgieva; Georgi T. Georgiev

Abstract It is shown that two signals contribute to the electrogtratory effect, when an alternating voltage is applied. The 2 f signal is measured experimentally in centrosymmetric crystals for the case when the quadratic electrooptic effect is zero. A Stokes-Mueller analysis of the electrogyratory and the quadratic electro-optic effects are given.
