An Innovative Electro-Optic Sensor for Point-Like Electric Field Measurements

Umberto Perini; Elena Golinelli; Letizia De Maria; Rudi Bratovich

The quantitative measurement of the electric field is a demanding task that has to be accomplished without perturbing the spatial distribution of the field itself and by using systems that can be operated safely also when intense electric fields have to be measured. In this paper it is presented an innovative fully dielectric electro-optic sensor suitable for measuring electric field in the range 150 V/m÷1 MV/m. An application example: the electric field shields characterization will be presented as a novel application.

Innovative optical systems and sensors for on line monitoring of high voltage overhead lines and power components

Letizia De Maria; Elena Golinelli; Umberto Perini

Optical systems and Optical Fiber Sensors offer a decisive solution to monitor critical parameters in presence of high electromagnetic interferences as in the case of the T&D network. These sensors can operate safely and, therefore, they are suitable for integration and security application to on-service electrical equipment. In this work we report some examples of RSE optical systems and sensors prototypes ad-hoc developed to potentially overcome some problems currently addressed by conventional systems. These mainly concern the remote sag monitoring on overhead lines, the on line detection of conductive defects in High Voltage insulator chains and the on line detection of the oil-paper degradation phenomena in power transformers.

A Laser Scanning System for Sag Detection on the Overhead Power Lines: In Field Measurements

Elena Golinelli; Umberto Perini; Franco Barberis; Sergio Musazzi

The paper describes a new optical system designed for the remote position monitoring of the conductors sag in high voltage aerial electric lines. The principle of operation relies on the detection of the intensity backscattered by the conductor under investigation when it is intercepted by a properly driven scanning laser beam. Results will be presented relevant to measurements carried out on a real power line.
