Low speed and high altitude flight: Unmanned flight at low speed in altitudes above 50,000ft

Ian R. McAndrew; Elena Navarro; Godsey O. Brig

Aerodynamics has been focused with ever increasing speeds in the early years of flight, then supersonic and now efficient speeds as close to Mcrit as possible for commercial flights. The constant need for faster speeds has been overtaken for efficiency of commercial aircraft since the grounding of Concorde. Nowadays, with Unmanned Ariel Vehicles, new demands are based on lower speeds and flying at very high or low altitudes to meets their applications and avoid commercial traffic. In this paper, the concerns and applications are addressed and how historical lessons can play a role in modern development.

Unmanned aerial systems operational challenges when used between regions where English is not widely spoken or understood: Human factors communication

Ian R. McAndrew; Aaron Glassman; Debra Bourdeau; R. Clint; Elena Navarro

Unmanned Aerial Systems, UASs, are being developed for more advanced operations such as search, research, and surveillance. These advanced operations may require flights of long distances, exceed line-of-sight, and involve flight crossing different geographic and cultural boundaries. When deployed in regions that require one or more such border crossings into areas where English may not be widely spoken or understood, additional operational challenges will likely exist. The limitations and possible boundaries are also evaluated to see the possible extent of the problem in Europe where in excess of two boundaries may exist. This research will examine those potential operational challenges, their inherent difficulties, and the associated risks, and any legal implications. It will compare the language skills required for commercial operators, both what is needed now and what will be needed in the future, to bridge the language gap for safe UAS operations in multi-lingual environments. Furthermore, it will examine language standardizations needed to ensure UASs maintain safety standards comparable to those achieved in the commercial passenger sector. In addition, it will recommend what future steps and the potential problems in implement.

Symmetrical aerofoils and the influences of damage or debris for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

Ian R. McAndrew; Elena Navarro; Orin Godsey

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles are typically low-cost and frequently have aerofoils sections that are symmetrical as these are more economical to manufacture. Low speeds are possible and stability acceptable and lift can still be generated providing the angle of incident is greater than zero. The research presented here is with a focus on how susceptible if the leading edge is damaged or has debris resulting from operating on grass or on airfields in non-standard conditions.

Drogue System Reliability Analysis Using Weibull Analysis

Ian R. McAndrew; Elena Navarro; Orin Godsey; Brig.Gen. Usaf

Refueling aircraft in-flight is a complex procedure at any time and has its concerns that have not fully been addressed, these are compounded if we consider remote piloting. Long term the need will exist to refuel unmanned vehicles if they are to carry out extensive applications; these complexities of in-flight refueling increases due to time delays and visual challenges between the actual remote aircraft and operators. This paper addresses the reliability of a drogue used in refueling and what can be learnt for future designs and usage. In particular what we can interpret from remote pilots and in-situ pilots.
