We report on mode-locking of a Cr:YAG laser at 1516 nm using a monolayer graphene-based saturable absorber of transmission type generating 91 fs pulses with a Fourier product of 0.38 at an average output power exceeding 100 mW. Stable single-pulse mode-locked operation without any sign of Q-switching instabilities or multiple pulses is achieved.

Large-area monolayer graphene, synthesized by chemical vapor deposition, was transferred to a 1-in. quartz substrate. The high-quality monolayer graphene has been subject to characterization of the nonlinear properties near 1 μm and was successfully applied as saturable absorber for passive mode-locking of a femtosecond Yb:KLuW laser. The diode-pumped mode-locked Yb:KLuW laser was tunable around 1.04 μm and delivered pulses as short as 160 fs. The maximum output power of 160 mW was demonstrated for 203 fs pulse duration. The mode-locked laser results are comparable to those demonstrated with the same laser gain medium using single-walled carbon nanotubes as saturable absorbers.

We demonstrate clear inhomogeneous linewidth broadening for the disordered laser crystal Nd:BaLaGa3O7 (Nd:BLG), which is very promising for the replacement of Nd:glass for ultrafast sources in multiwatt power applications. A Nd:BLG laser oscillator passively mode-locked and pumped by a Ti:sapphire laser generated pulses of 316-fs duration at 1060?nm, whose spectrum completely fills the fluorescence peak at such wavelength. More interestingly, sub-picosecond pulses were smoothly tunable in a 20-nm range, from 1070 to 1090?nm. The shortest pulses achieved were 290?fs long, centered at 1075?nm.

378 fs pulse generation with Nd3+:SrLaGa3O7 (Nd:SLG) disordered crystal

In this work we present femtosecond pulse generation with a disordered Nd:SLG crystal. By pumping with a Ti:sapphire laser tuned at 808 nm, we obtained pulses as short as 378 fs in a single-dispersive prism resonator employing a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM) for mode-locking. Furthermore, sub-picosecond pulses were generated in the 1060–1083 nm spectral range.

In this paper, single-mode 200-mW laser diodes have been demonstrated to be very effective pump devices for low-power Nd:glass lasers, yielding the remarkable continuous wave (cw) slope efficiency of 46.5% for silicate and 58.2% for phosphate glasses, respectively. Femtosecond operation has been investigated with both semiconductor saturable absorber mirrors (SESAMs) and a single-walled carbon nanotube SAM (SWCNT-SAM). Furthermore, a detailed comparison of the mode-locking performance with Nd:phosphate and Nd:silicate, employing either one of the SA devices is presented. Although not fully optimized for this particular application yet, SWCNT-SAs yielded sub-100-fs pulses for the first time in Nd:glass. With SESAM mode locking and a single-prism resonator for dispersion compensation, pulse duration as short as 92 fs has been measured, whereas shorter pulses down to 80 fs have been obtained with a two-prism resonator. Tuning range as broad as 30 nm and output power up to 55 mW have also been achieved, confirming the effectiveness of the proposed laser architecture.

Bandwidth-limited pulses of sub-50 fs duration at 1506 nm are generated by a Cr:YAG laser mode-locked with a single-walled carbon nanotube saturable absorber. A Stokes shifted sideband at 1626 nm is observed for the broadest oscillation spectra.

We present femtosecond Nd:glass lasers pumped by single-mode 200-mW diodes, mode-locked by single-walled carbon nanotube saturable absorbers. We obtained sub-150-fs and sub-100-fs stable pulse trains with phosphate and silicate glasses, respectively.
