Quadratic solitons in media with negative refractive index

A. I. Maĭmistov; Ildar R. Gabitov; Elena V. Kazantseva

The propagation of pulses of the pump and its second harmonic in a quadratically nonlinear medium whose linear properties are characterized by a negative refractive index at the pump frequency and by a positive refractive index at the harmonic frequency is considered theoretically. In the case of a low intensity of the interacting waves, the pump and second-harmonic pulses propagate in the opposite directions, but sufficiently powerful pulses can form a simulton—a solitary two-frequency wave propagating in a certain direction as a single whole. Solutions to a set of equations are found which describe the steady-state propagation of a solitary wave and of a nonlinear periodic (cnoidal) wave.

) polarization oscillations are observed in the ferroelectric sample. These can be understood using a simple field-polarization model. In particular we obtain analytic expressions for the oscillation frequency and the decay time of the polarization fluctuation in terms of the material parameters. These estimations agree well with the experimental results.

Three wave interaction in negative refractive index materials with quadratic nonlinearity

Andrei I. Maimistov; Ildar R. Gabitov; Elena V. Kazantseva

The coupled electromagnetic waves propagating in a waveguide array, which consists of alternating waveguides of positive and negative refraction indexes, are discussed. The pair of positive-negative waveguides acts as oppositely directional coupler. The stop band in the spectrum of linear waves occurs. When pairs of these waveguides are collected in array or bundle the spectral properties of the resulted device are modified. We study spectral gaps in these waveguide systems and demonstrate that the number of waveguides and helical spatial twist of the array can be used to control the size of the gap.

Coherent amplification of the short optical pulse in a non-linear birefringent medium

Elena V. Kazantseva; Andrei I. Maimistov; Sergei O. Elyutin; Stefan Wabnitz

The nonlinear transmission of the short electromagnetic pulse results in switching of the thin ferroelectric film polarization. Estimations of the switching dynamics parameters are presented. Analysis of the model based on dynamical Landau equations to the recent experimental results allows us compare theoretical predictions and the experimental data.
