Isolation of polar reducing corticosteroids from human urine

Eli M. Nadel; Shlomo Burstein; Ralph I. Dorfman

Abstract Ethyl acetate extracts of human urine have been analyzed by the use of paper chromatography for polar reducing corticosteroids. 6β-Hydroxycortisol (as diacetate) has been isolated in crystalline form from urinary extracts of normal men with and without cortisol feeding. 3α, 11β,17α,21-Tetrahydroxypregnane-20-one was isolated in the unconjugated form from urine following the feeding of cortisol to normal men. Two other reducing steroids more polar than cortisol and most likely C 21 O 6 steroids have been partially characterized.
