La experiencia Kelluwen: Tres años de desarrollo y puesta en práctica de una propuesta de innovación didáctica con uso de TIC

Eliana Scheihing; Julio Guerra; Luis Cárcamo; Paula Flores; Daniela Troncoso; Carolina Aros

Kelluwen validated a holistic didactical strategy incorporating the use of ICT in classroom curricula aiming to improve socio-communicative skills in students from 12 to 16 years old. The didactical strategy is based on the socio-constructivist approach and it is deployed in three axes: the validation of 17 Collaborative Didactical Designs, the development of the Kelluwen Web Platform, and the development of an integral evaluation strategy. The experience in 167 classrooms in schools of southern Chile showed promising results. Analysing Microblogs of Middle and High School Students

Javiera Born; Eliana Scheihing; Julio Guerra; Luis Cárcamo

The Kelluwen project implements middle and high-school educational activities where the use of Web 2.0 tools is incorporated to improve collaboration construction, sharing and publishing of the learning outcomes. The Worklog tool, a microblogging space within the Kelluwen platform has an active role in the educational activities. Using probabilistic topic models, correlation analysis and principal component analysis (PCA), we analyzed micropost of 85 class groups participating in the Kelluwen project and found interesting relations of the types of messages posted and other factors such as the teacher participation in the microblog, the rural or urban nature of the schools and other aspects of the educational experience.

Quasi-Delaunay Triangulations Using GPU-Based Edge-Flips

Cristobal A. Navarro; Nancy Hitschfeld; Eliana Scheihing

The edge-flip technique has been widely used for transforming any existing triangular mesh into a Delaunay mesh. Although several tools for generating Delaunay triangulations are known, there is no one that offers a realtime solution capable of maintaining the Delaunay condition on dynamically changing triangulations and, in particular, one integrable with the OpenGL rendering pipeline. In this paper we present an iterative GPGPU-based method capable of improving triangulations under the Delaunay criterion. Since the algorithm uses an \(\epsilon \) value to handle co-circular or close to co-circular point configurations, a low percentage of triangles do not fulfill the Delaunay condition. We have compared the triangulations generated by our method with the ones generated by the Triangle software and by the CGAL library and we obtained less than 0.05 % different triangles for full random meshes and less than 1 % for noise based ones. Based on our experimental results, we report speedups from 14\(\times \) to 50\(\times \) against Lawson’s sequential algorithm and of approximately 3\(\times \) against the CGAL’s and Triangle’s constructive algorithms when processing full random triangulations. In our noise based tests we report up to 36\(\times \) and 27\(\times \) of speedup against CGAL and Triangle, respectively.

Understanding the Role of Micro-Blogging in B-Learning Activities: Kelluwen Experiences in Chilean Public Schools

Eliana Scheihing; Matthieu Vernier; Julio Guerra; Javiera Born; Luis Cárcamo

With the goal of incorporating the use of social network tools into the formal curriculum of public schools in Chile, Kelluwen developed a b-learning approach in which students work in groups and engage in peer review dynamics. To support such activities, the Kelluwen platform provides a complementary micro-blogging tool called Worklog. In this study, we analyze data collected from Worklog messages generated by 101 cohorts of students from different schools and different levels, who participated in Kelluwen activities. We first used machine learning techniques to discover three types of messages which coincide with three dialogic functions; referential, phatic, and emotional. We then analyze how different factors of the cohort and group setup relate to the presence of different dialogic functions in Worklog. Results show the positive effect of pairing groups of students from different schools, and the positive influence of teacher participation. Our work contributes to the discussion on the role of technological social tools on the implementation of complex b-learning activities in schools, as well as demonstrating how automatic and semi-automatic data analysis techniques can be used to better understand such complex interventions.
