Creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship are slogans that have become an integral part of modern tourism economy. Creativity and innovation of tourism economy as well as the meaning of creativity in tourism business are intensely discussed. Today, creativity is being frequently analyzed as a basic feature of actions performed on a daily basis in terms of both personal and professional life, a feature that every employee is required to possess. It means that employers and, above all, the education system must feel it necessary to develop certain conditions in which human creativity can be shaped, which is understood as a system that enables us to adjust to constantly changing environment and take a risk to apply new solutions to particular problems. The article aims to present the role of creativity in development of innovation in tourism as well as factors that improve it. The analytical part of the article will concentrate on the analysis of, inter alia, two significant groups of creativity determinants: factors related to availability of qualified staff on the local labor market as well as info-structure of tourism businesses.

Innovation requires a capacity to seek, absorb and utilize external knowledge, and an ability to develop, leverage or exchange internally-generated knowledge. Internally, it requires the structuring of information channels within and across hierarchical or divisional levels. Externally, it implies choices and costs in selecting and managing interactions and collaborations. Based on an original survey of open innovation practices amongst UK firms, this paper addresses this gap by exploring the impact of external and internal openness, the role of formal vs. informal knowledge sourcing practices (and their interaction), on the innovative performance of business services. Not only external but also internal openness positively affect the innovative performance of firm. Among different types of knowledge exchange mechanisms, informal practices are especially effective. As the demand-pull theories of innovation are making their come back, there is also increasing interest in the role of government demand in stimulating innovation. Governments, especially in OECD countries, have announced initiatives and reforms aimed at mobilising the use of procurement to support competitiveness and innovation (OECD, 2013). In the past 10 years, the oil and gas rich countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council have earmarked substantial financial resources to support the development of domestic innovation systems. This paper draws on the Abu Dhabi Innovation Survey to discern the impact of demand on innovation, particularly that of government demand. With a few exceptions (Aschhoff and Sofka 2009; Slavtchev and Wiederhold 2012; Guerzoni and Raiteri 2015), most of the empirical evidence on the effect of government demand on innovation is based on case studies (Edler 2013, Edquist and Zabala-Iturriagagoitia 2012, 2014; Edquist 2015; Georghiou et al. 2014;). This paper therefore provides two unique insights, firstly, insights into an innovation survey from the Middle East and, secondly, insights into the influence of substantial domestic albeit “un-articulated” demand.

Design is of key importance to the UK economy, with £33.5billion spent on design in 2008. This importance prompted the IPO to commission a set of research projects around design rights which has been produced in four chapters.The second chapter looks at the impact registered design rights have on business performance, given a UK or EU design registration.
