ABSTRACT We surveyed the epizoic algae growing on Emys orbicularis from several sites in the Central Anatolia region of Turkey during the nesting season (May-August) of 2005. Fifty-three algae species were found on carapaces of thirty-five E. Orbicularis, with considerable variation in the algal communities from different sites.

This work analyses the seasonality of phytoplankton (species richness, biovolume, diversity, abundance and dominance) associated with some physical, chemical and climatic variables of shallow turbid lake (Tatlι Lake, Turkey) between February 2000 and April 2001. Samples were collected monthly from the two stations from the surface (0–20 cm). Species richness and diversity (Shannon-Weaver, H’) index were calculated. Seasonal changes in phytoplankton community structure (i. e., the species present and their relative abundances) were evaluated with Nonmetric Multidimensional Scaling (NMDS) ordinations. Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) was used to investigate the relationship between phytoplankton and physico-chemical parameters. A total of 144 species most of which belonged to the Bacillariophyta and Chlorophyta could be identified. Other taxonomic groups were Cyanoprokaryota, Euglenophyta, Pyrrophyta, Cryptophyta and Xanthophyta. The diatoms Cyclotella ocellata PANTOCSEK, Nitzschia palea (KUTZING) W. SMITH, Fragilaria ulna LANGE-BERTALOT and the green algae Ankistrodesmus falcatus (CORDA) RALFS show continuously high portions in the phytoplankton assemblage. High salinity and turbidity of the lake restricted the species number.

ABSTRACT The composition and seasonal variations of phytoplankton of Lake Ladik were studied between June 2000 and May 2001. The taxa identified included members of Cyanoprokaryota (8), Bacillariophyta (46), Chlorophyta (54), Euglenophyta (30), Cryptophyta (2), Dinophyta (1) and Xanthophyta (1). In the phytoplankton, Cyclotella ocellata, Aulacoseria distans, Trachelomonas hispida, T. volvocina var. punctata, Cryptomonas ovata, Pediastrum spp., and Scenedesmus spp. were common organisms. Seasonal variations in phytoplankton appeared to be related to availability of light and temperature rather than various measured nutrients.

ABSTRACT Epiphytic algae growing on the submersed macrophyte Nuphar lutea L. were surveyed in three lakes in June 2000 and May 2001. All total, forty species of Bacillariophyta were identified, and the species composition of this algal flora differed among the three lakes. Navicula cryptocephnla, Navicula veneta, Cymbella affinis and Licmophora gracilis var. angiica were common in Ladik Lake. Cocconeis pediculus and Cocconeis disculus were major components of the epiphytic algae in Lake Tatlı and Lake Gıcı; and, Navicula salinarum and Navicula halophila, indicators of high salinity, were also found abundantly in these lakes.
