Dr Francis Braceland comments in the foreword that this book gives an overview of some of the physicians problems taking place in the wings, while the doctor in his professional capacity occupies center stage. The Physician , indeed, does give an overview of the personal and professional problems of many physicians. The book begins with an overview of life as a medical student, intern, and resident and the stresses the developing professional faces in each of these roles. Following this is a section on the troubled physician, including material describing the divorced physician, the addicted physician, the alcoholic physician, and physician suicide. The third section of the book deals with the minority physician, ie, female, Afro-American, physically handicapped, gay and lesbian physicians, and foreign medical graduates and retired practitioners. Most of the material presented is covered in an overview, with less explored in great depth. It is always fun to read
