Beyond these walls: Building a library outreach program at Oakland University

Elizabeth W. Kraemer; Dana Keyse; Shawn V. Lombardo

Abstract To enhance the learning experiences of all students, todays academic librarians must engage in outreach efforts that move beyond the walls of the library. In the past year, Oakland Universitys Kresge Library has made significant inroads in developing outreach initiatives that provide needed services to previously underserved student populations, such as transfer students, multicultural groups, and on-cam-pus residents. These programs have increased the librarys visibility, enhanced its image among the universitys students, faculty, and staff alike, and positioned it at the heart of teaching and learning on campus. This article describes some of these outreach efforts.

The Librarian Leading the Machine: A Reassessment of Library Instruction Methods

Katie Greer; Amanda Nichols Hess; Elizabeth W. Kraemer

This article builds on the 2007 College and Research Libraries article, “The Librarian, the Machine, or a Little of Bsoth.” Since that time, Oakland University Libraries implemented changes to its instruction program that reflect larger trends in teaching and assessment throughout the profession; following these revisions, librarians undertook a new study to assess the effectiveness of online library instruction in face-to-face courses in comparison to the hybrid model that had been in place. The study’s design and its results serve to contribute to discussion of best practices in information literacy pedagogy, online learning, instructional design, and the role of the librarian therein.

Developing Information Literacy Instruction for Honors Students at Oakland University: An Information Consulting Approach

Elizabeth W. Kraemer

ABSTRACT Entering the university setting can be daunting for even the brightest of students, given the increased coursework and research expected of them compared to high school. To support these significant research needs and help Oakland University honors students meet their academic goals, a librarian liaison position was created to work with Honors College students and faculty, with information literacy instruction as the focus of the services the Library offers to the Honors College. This article describes the development of the information literacy instruction program for the Honors College at Oakland University and discusses plans for future growth of the information consulting relationship. doi:10.1300/J106v14n03_04
