A comparison of botulinum toxin a and intralesional steroids for the treatment of plantar fasciitis: a randomized, double-blinded study.

Background: The objective of this study was to compare intramuscularly applied botulinum toxin A (BTX-A) in the gastroc-soleus complex with intralesional steroids for the treatment of plantar fasciitis. Methods: The patients were randomly divided into 2 groups according to the treatment received. The patients were evaluated over 6 months. The evaluation scores included the Visual Analog Scale (VAS), Maryland Foot and Ankle, Foot and Ankle Disability Index (FADI), and American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) score. Moreover, patients were instructed to perform plantar fascia stretching exercises over the course of the study. The final number of patients was 36, of whom 19 received BTX-A (10 men and 9 women) and 17 (6 men and 11 women) received steroids. Results: When compared to patients who received steroids, the patients who received BTX-A exhibited more rapid and sustained improvement over the duration of the study. Conclusion: A combination of BTX-A and plantar fascia stretching exercises yielded better results for the treatment of plantar fasciitis than intralesional steroids. Randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial of buccal misoprostol to reduce the need for additional uterotonic drugs during cesarean delivery.

To determine whether buccal misoprostol during cesarean delivery in conjunction with active management of the third stage of labor reduces the need for additional uterotonic drugs.

Antimicrobial Activity of a Cationic Guanidine Compound against Two Pathogenic Oral Bacteria

This study evaluated the potential antimicrobial properties of a polyguanidine (CatDex) on two oral bacteria. Chlorhexidine gluconate 1340 μmoL L−1 (CHX 0.12%) was used as control. Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) and Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis) were grown in BHI media. Bacterial sensitivity and antimicrobial activity were determined by the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and Kirby-Bauer methods. To study side effects, that is, toxicity, dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) were used. Fluorometric cytotoxicity and confocal microscopy assays were used in order to test cell viability. CatDex inhibited growth of S. mutans at all concentrations and growth of P. gingivalis at all concentrations except 25 μmoL L−1. The MIC of CatDex was 50 μmoL L−1 for both S. mutans and P. gingivalis. The inhibition of bacteria exposed for 8 h at 50 μmoL L−1 of CatDex exhibited increased antimicrobial activity over time, with 91% inhibition in both bacteria. The antimicrobial activities of CatDex and CHX were similar when tested on two common bacteria. CatDex was significantly less toxic to DPSCs. CatDex toxicity depended on time and not on concentration. With regard to clinical relevance, CatDex may have potential as a novel antimicrobial agent. Further studies are in progress.
