Computer Science Studies in English from the Perspective of Students and Business

Marek Milosz; Elzbieta Milosz

Software development and the digital services market are currently growing very rapidly and, as most other areas, are subject to processes of globalisation. As a consequence, ICT companies need personnel prepared to work in international environments. This applies especially to developing economies, such as Poland.

The Perception of the One-Semester International Academic Mobility Programme by Students of Computer Science

Marek Milosz; Elzbieta Milosz

Increase in student mobility is one of the objectives of the European Union (EU) and many other countries of the world. This mobility is meant to increase the ability and flexibility to acquire knowledge and skills by students, get them used to the freedom of movement of people and services, and educate them in the area of international and multicultural cooperation. The EU, through a number of programmes (especially those grouped in Erasmus+), supports such mobility organisationally and financially. The article presents the results of research among students of Computer Science (CS), aimed at detecting their perception of the opportunity to participate in a one-semester international academic mobility, i.e. to study abroad for one semester. The survey covered almost all undergraduate CS students of the Lublin University of Technology at their fifth semester, when they take decisions to apply to go abroad for one semester. We analysed their overall assessment of this type of travel, the level of the perceived usefulness of the experience, the concerns and risks associated with it and the students’ interest. Some elements of the research were differentiated for Polish and foreign students. The results of the tests are not conclusive, because despite the generally positive perception of the programme, a relatively small percentage of students declare their willingness to take part in it.

Developing and implementation of decision-making games for business education of engineering students

Marek Milosz; Elzbieta Milosz

Engineering students need to improve their business competence. One of the most effective methods are decision-making games in the area of business. The article presents the technology for building mathematical models of situations simulated in games of decision-making and an authoring system of developing and implementing serious simulation games using web technologies. The developed software system allows to create a game by defining and testing the computing model of the simulated situation, the user interface, the games implementation, and an analysis of its results. An example of game developed with the aid of the system and used for training engineering students is also presented. It takes into account the specificity and level of the business knowledge of engineering students.

ICT STUDY IN ENGLISH IN THE EYES OF POLISH AND KYRGYZ STUDENTS

Marek Milosz; Nella Israilova; Elzbieta Milosz

The ICT industry is amenable to globalisation. In the global market operating ICT companies the most commonly used language is English. As a consequence, companies need specialists fluent in this language, including elements of the jargon of the trade. At the same time, higher education in the countries of Eastern Europe and Central Asia is gradually upgrading. One of the directions is the internationalisation of education. In the area of ICT internationalisation studies primarily means the development and implementation of study curricula in English. The requirements of the labour market in the area of ICT are recognised by both students and teachers. This paper presents the results of research into the interest of undergraduate ICT students in continuing postgraduate education in English. During the study, mainly three hypotheses were tested: H1. ICT undergraduate students are ready and willing to study in English at Masters level. H2. The primary motive for studying in English is a higher salary at work. H3. Fear of studies in English is the main de-motivator in choosing this option. The research was carried out by a questionnaire among ICT students of two technical universities: the Lublin University of Technology (Lublin, Poland) and the Iskhak Razzakov Kyrgyz State Technical University (Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan). The study involved more than 70% of the ICT undergraduate students. Both survey groups were subjected to the same methodology of research and processing of results. The paper presents the research methodology and results of research. Differences between the perception of the problem by the Polish and Kyrgyz ICT students are discussed in detail.
