N,N,N-tris(5-alkoxytroponyl)-1,5,9-triazacyclododecanes and their corresponding benzenoids were synthesised to investigate their mesomorphic properties. The troponoids have a bicontinuous cubic phase with a Pn3m space group whereas the benzenoids form a smectic A phase. The thermal stability of the cubic phase of the troponoids is decreased when the length of the alkyl group is increased whereas that of the smectic A phase of the benzenoids behaves reversely. The cubic phase of the troponoid should represent an organisation of the fluid alkyl chains within the interwoven networks whereas the polar azacrown and tropolone units should form the continuum.

In the title complex, [N-(7-oxocyclohepta-1,3,5-trien-1-yl)-1,4,7,10-tetraoxa-13-azacyclopentadecane]bis(thiocyanato-N)calcium, [Ca(NCS) 2 (C 17 H 25 NO 5 )], the calcium ion has irregular eight coordination involving four ether O atoms, one tropone O atom, one aza-crown N atom and two thiocyanate N atoms.

In the title complex, [Ba2(NCS)4(C17H25NO5)2], each Ba2+ cation is coordinated by one N atom, four O atoms of the macrocyclic unit, two N atoms of thioxadcyanate unit and one O atom from each of the tropone units.

N-(9-anthrylmethyl)-N-(tropon-2-yl)diaza-18-crown-6 (4) gave a weak emission, showing that the excited anthracene chromophore was quenched by the diazacrown nitrogen atoms and tropone unit. Diazacrown (4) was found to display unique photophysical properties in the presence of metal salts. Diazacrown (4) exhibited Cu 2 + selectivity and in the presence of this cation the host fluorescence intensity was increased by a factor of 7.8.

The title compounds, 4-hydroxy-5-oxo-1,3,6-cycloheptatriene-1-carbonitrile, C(8)H(5)NO(2), (I), and 2-hydroxy-5-nitro-2,4,6-cycloheptatrien-1-one, C(7)H(5)NO(4), (II), have intra- and intermolecular hydrogen bonds. The structure of (II) contains two crystallographically independent molecules, (IIa) and (IIb). An intermolecular pi-pi interaction and an intermolecular NO(2).pi-pi interaction are present in (I) and (II), respectively.

Molecules of the title compound, C54H56N4, are centrosymmetric and adopt a conformation with two naphthylxadmethyl groups above the cyclam ring and the remaining two below. Packing with intermolecular π–π interaction between naphthalene planes is observed.

The molecule of the title compound, C26H26N2, sits on a center of symmetry such that the two naphthalene ring systems are in an anti conformation with respect to one another across the piperazine ring. An interxadmolecular π–π interxadaction between the naphthalene ring systems is observed.
