In the last few years an indirect method has been used t@ reveal infections caused by hzmolytic streptococci. By this method the serum antibody (antistreptolysin), which is formed against the haemolytic toxin (streptolysin) produced by the, streptococci, is measured. The reaction is called the antistreptolysin reaction, and was elaborated by Todd (8) in 1932.. All the commonly occurring streptococci, which are pathogenic to man and belong to Lancefields groups A, C and G, produce a haemolysin which is antigenic in the free state. This O-streptolysin is active in the reduced form, it is oxygenlabile, but can be reactivated by reduction. In patients with streptococcal infections such as acute tonsillitis, erysipelas and scarlet fever the antistreptolysin titre (A. S. T.) is raised. It is of special interest in this connection that an increased titre of antihaemolysin-0 in the serum is found in about 80-100 per cent of acute rheumatism in the active phase.

Forty-nine ears with noise-induced hearing loss were tested with pure-tone and speech audiometry. Hearing loss for speech was calculated from pure-tone audiometric findings by means of the A.M.A., Harris and Wisconsin methods. Calculated values differed so much from the observed that the methods have proved invalid in occupational hearing loss.
