Coronary artery anomalies (CAAs) are a rare entity but their true incidence in the general population has yet to be determined. Most CAAs are asymptomatic, but they are nevertheless the second leading cause of sudden death in apparently healthy young athletes. The new imaging methods available to cardiologists, including CT angiography and MRI, now enable noninvasive diagnosis and characterization of these anomalies. The authors review the literature and present a retrospective study of 360 consecutive patients who underwent cardiac CT angiography. Demographic, clinical and angiographic characteristics were studied. The incidence of CAAs in this population was 2.69%. In order to better characterize this disorder, including diagnostic strategy, screening, treatment and prognosis, the authors suggest the establishment of a national registry of cardiac CT angiography. Such a registry would fill the existing gap in information on exams performed in the country, enriching current knowledge about this disease and noninvasive cardiac imaging in Portugal.

Abstract The volatile composition of Mangifera indica var. coquinho has been studied. The essential oils were obtained by hydrodistillation in a modified Clevenger-type apparatus, and their analyses were performed by GC-FID and GC/MS. A total of 19 different compounds were identified. Sesquiterpene hydrocarbons were shown to be the main group of constituents of all taxa. The main constituents of the oil were α-gurjunene (24.0%), β-selinene (24.0%), β-caryophyllene (11.2%), α-humulene (7.2%), caryophyllene oxide (5.5%) and humulene epoxide (2.4%). The cytotoxic activity of the oil was more pronounced than antioxidant and antimicrobial activities.

50-year-old man with a history of type 2 diabetes, peranent atrial fibrillation and chest pain, was referred for ardiac CT to exclude coronary disease. The exam revealed on-significant coronary disease, dilated LA and a subtracion image in the left atrial appendage suggestive of thromus (Figure 2). The diagnosis could have been confirmed y a second scan a few minutes after the first or by transsophageal echocardiography, but these were not performed ecause the results would not have altered the therapeutic pproach. The patient was prescribed oral anticoagulation.
