menced in 1989; by 2008, the Study had grown to include a wide range of disciplines, and had 73 publications. To capitalise on this success, and secure the Study’s long-term competitiveness, a management structure and governance procedures were developed to foster research excellence. Aims: To evaluate measures of productivity pre and post introduction of formal management and governance structures. Methods: In 2009, a formal research management structure was adopted. Governance procedures were implemented to support targeted, coordinated approaches to securing funding via competitive peer-review processes and philanthropy. Results: Annual grant income, quantity of research deliverables, higher degree by research students, and collaboration (both nationally and internationally) increased substantially. Average cost per publication: 1988–2008:

2.5M. Conclusions: The implementation of strengthened governance and management procedures likely augmented the natural learning curve. Collaboration at a national and international level enables the Raine Study to engage with key studies and experts at a global level, driving development of high-quality research output, and providing access to funding agencies around the world. Adoption of a formal Management Team and Governance Procedures enabled the Raine Study to create and capture a significant amount of value for researchers, clinicians and the broader community.
