In this study, 2-hydroxy-5-methoxyacetophenone thiosemicarbazone (HMAT) and its novel N(4) substituted derivatives were synthesized and characterized by different techniques. The optical band gap of the compounds and the energy of HOMO were experimentally examined by UV-vis spectra and cyclic voltammetry measurements, respectively. Furthermore, the conformational spaces of the compounds were scanned with molecular mechanics method. The geometry optimization, HOMO and LUMO energies, the energy gap of the HOMO-LUMO, dipole moment of the compounds were theoretically calculated by the density functional theory B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) level. The minimal electronic excitation energy and maximum wavelength calculations of the compounds were also performed by TD-DFT//B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) level of theory. Theoretically calculated values were compared with the related experimental values. The combined results exhibit that all compounds have good electron-donor properties which affect anti-proliferative activity. The cytotoxic effects of the compounds were also evaluated against HeLa (cervical carcinoma), MCF-7 (breast carcinoma) and PC-3 (prostatic carcinoma) cell lines using the standard MTT assay. All tested compounds showed antiproliferative effect having IC50 values in different range. In comparison with that of HMAT, it was obtained that while ethyl group on 4(N)-substituted position decreased in potent anti-proliferative effect, the phenyl group on the position increased in anti-proliferative effect for the tested cancer cell line. Considering the molecular energy parameters, the cytotoxicity activities of the compounds were discussed.

The kinetics of complexation reaction of Cu(II) with 9-ethyl-3-carbazolecarboxaldehyde-thiosemicarbazone (ECCAT) has been examined spectrophotometrically. The ligand was synthesized for the first time. The complexation reaction was carried out in a DMF-water medium at 35°C. The complex has maximum absorbance at 393 nm. Kinetic and activation parameters of the complexation reaction were calculated by the Arrhenius and Eyring equations using the data obtained from investigating the effect of temperature on reaction rates under the specified conditions. We also proposed reaction rate equations. Based on the studied complexation reaction, a simple kinetic method for the spectrophotometric determination of copper(II) has been developed. The calibration graphs are linear in the concentration range 0.2–1.9 μg/mL. The species that caused interference were investigated.

Comparison of Commercial Anion‐Exchange Membranes for Pickle Waste Treatment by Electro‐Electrodialysis

Emine G. Akgemci; Mustafa Ersoz; Tevfik Atalay

Abstract This study deals with recovery conditions of acids from the pickle waste of leather industry by applying of electro‐electrodialysis process. The pickle waste consists of NaCl, HCOOH, H2SO4, and organic dirt. The four commercial anion exchange membranes (Neosepta AFN, ACM, AMH, and Polysulfone SB‐6407) have been used and the necessary specific energies for recovering conditions as well as the most appropriate membranes were determined. In the laboratory‐scale experiments, AMH anion‐exchange membrane has the best combination of electrochemical, mechanical properties and high ion permselectivity. On the contrary, AFN membrane showed good performance with respect to other membranes used and it has the lowest necessary specific energy. In this method, HCl was also produced from its salt during the recovering process.

Synthesis and electrochemical properties of a novel calix[4]arene derivative for facilitated transfer of alkali metal ions across water/1,2-dichloroethane micro-interface

Ferhat Kaykal; Haluk Bingol; Ahmet Burak Sarıgüney; Ahmet Coskun; Emine G. Akgemci

The alkali metal ion transfers facilitated by a novel calix[4]arene derivative (OPEC) across the water/1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCE) micro-interface supported at the tip of a micropipette were presented. The well-defined voltammetric behaviours except Cs+ was obtained by cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry. The bulk concentration of metal ions was much higher than that of OPEC in the performed measurements. The diffusion coefficient of OPEC in the 1,2-DCE phase was calculated as 5.18 ± 0.70 × 10− 6 cm2 s− 1. On the basis of the changes of the half-wave transfer potentials, the logarithms of the association constants having 1:1 ionophore–ion complex stoichiometry for Li+, Na+, K+ and Rb+ in 1,2-DCE were determined as 4.80, 4.62, 4.98 and 5.32, respectively. The facilitated ion transfers were also evaluated by the Randles equivalent circuit used for ac-impedance data analysis.
