In the past, many researches have examined and addressed the notion of trust multidimensional in concepts within the areas of e-commerce ranging from business to business (B2B), business to consumer (B2C) and consumer to consumer (C2C). Indeed, the element of trust is vital in ensuring the success of e-commerce. However, the web evolution has moved the interpersonal and inter-organizational transactions to knowledge and information exchange with the rise of Web Mediated Information Environment (W-MIE) that offer services such as health advice, religion information, political views and financial advice. Hence, the aim of this research is to identify trust elements within the context of Islamic based informational websites. We contend that this environment posed significant emotional values to its users in terms of the overall design strategy for the web content, interface representation and systems characteristics adherence to Islamic values, principles and guidelines. This paper reported the results of an experiment conducted within the scope of Islamic educational based websites by using semantic differential method with 10 Islamic users. The measured elements are derived through literature analysis and Islamic expert review. Through factor analysis we have found 8 trust elements which are significant for the design of Islamic web based content websites. There are “credibility”, “benevolence”, “Tauheed”, “avoid distraction”, “presentable”, “well-conveyed”, “avoid unfairness” and “avoid childish” and discussion towards design implications are further elaborated.

The concept of resilience is becoming popular in the business continuity management debate and academic analysis. This interest is associated with the concern to develop a resilient organization that is able to absorb, adapt and recover quickly from unexpected events or changes to ensure continuous services or critical business function and operations. Literature analysis from related articles found that resilience is still a relatively new concept and there are some unanswered questions on the definition of organizations resilience, the capacity that make up resilience and the mechanisms to enable the organization to remain exist and functioning. Thus, this paper adds to the literature an understanding of the issues and modelling the capacity of resilience from the perspective of individual and organizations resilience.

Trust has become an essential prerequisite for customer relationship building. Implementing institutional mechanisms seems to be an obvious outcome in inducing trust, rather than the result of independently motivated decisions of the users interpretation on the institutional design features to be trustworthy. Proponents of this idea argued by understanding the concept of a sign and its related properties, it is possible to improve the analysis and design of interface design elements within web environment to induce trust. Drawn from established theoretical work on institutional based trust and semiotic, the concept of Institutional Symbolism and its four underlying dimensions are proposed to facilitate thinking and perception as to how trust can be built through signs comprehension. Conceptualized in the context of web mediated information environment, the implications of these dimensions on web site design and future work is further discussed.

By the year 2020, Malaysian population is expected to reach aged population with 3.4 million being senior citizens. The retirement of the ageing people is a concern to most organization as it also means lost of organization’s knowledge. Lack of appreciation of the value of tacit knowledge and lack of planning to capture retirees’ knowledge before they leave put many organizations in a position to suffer a loss of intellectual knowledge that may prove fatal. Therefore this research attempts to review issues that is considered essential in strategizing intergenerational knowledge transfer. In this paper, we reviewed 52 and examined various issued related to intergenerational knowledge transfer. Since transferring knowledge from older people involves lots of challenges due to cognitive decline experience by themselves, we also studied research done in social psychology area and explore their applicability in knowledge transfer practice. We consider social psychology to be a discipline from which theories, models, and research results can be harnessed for knowledge management. Our review reveal important issues in the literature to be considered for successful intergenerational knowledge transfer.

The question on how to impose the sense of “legitimacy” in designing information artifact which can be rationalized and controlled as part of the overall interface design strategy and future IS construction for sensitive settings becomes our primary aim of this research. The research key focal point is to refine the notions of the human computer interface within the Web Mediated Information Environment (W-MIE) context through the evolution of novel ways in assisting its design deployment and evaluation from non technical perspectives of requirements by addressing the earliest (conceptual) state of development work concerning the role of “soft” trust dimensions, as signals for trustworthiness governing interaction on the web. Drawing the attention to the web based information for Islamic content sharing sites, the paper present and discussed empirical results of its qualitative study that explicate the role of “institutional symbolisms” representation to safeguard interaction on the web.

Interrelationship between ethnicity, motivation and technology usage is an interesting scope of study as it offers various dimensions to be explored, polished and refined. One of the most interest areas is on the motivational factors for technology usage among the indigenous people from the viewpoints of socio-structural, socioeconomic and socio cultural. This paper present the findings on the motivational factors of technology usage based on the socioeconomic and socio cultural situational study of Orang Asli in Peninsular Malaysia. The study analysis was performed against the theoretical lens of need-based theory of technology use to uncover constructs of needs that can be identified as motivational factors for technology use. From the study, it is found that Orang Asli has a tendency toward holding on to perceived idea of enjoyment and the preservation of culture and benefits delivery as a motivation for them to use the technology. We propose the affect based needs and cultural needs as new constructs for technology use by the indigenous people.

In some countries, it is revealed that the ICT usage by indigenous people is possible to be accomplished and utilized to deliver benefits. For the purpose of development and advancement of Orang Asli (one of the indigenous groups in Malaysia) and in support of the national aspirations in Vision 2020, ICT exposure to Orang Asli requires holistic implementation. Therefore, the predominant issue to be discovered comprehensively is about Orang Asli and it is imperative to understand their needs and requirements in terms of ICT acceptance, appropriation, barriers, as well as infrastructure and infostructure issues. In conclusion, we found four main aspects to be considered in research involving Orang Asli’s use of ICT and benefit ICT: (i) the influential people, (ii) infrastructure barriers (iii) social development issues, and (iv) motivational factors.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to investigate the contributing factors to E-government disruptions in Malaysia public service. Researchers have highlighted that the main factors that contribute to IT service failure are the people, process and technology. However, relatively few empirical studies examine to what extent these factors contribute to E-government service disruptions. This study explores the level of contribution of each factor to the E-government service disruptions. Design/methodology/approach The research was conducted based on the hypothetical-deductive approach. Based on the synthesized literature review, a conceptual model is proposed and several hypotheses are developed. The study was undertaken using questionnaires via convenience sampling whereby eight frontline agencies, six departments and four ministries in Malaysian public service were selected. The selected agencies are frontline agencies (agencies that deal directly with citizens) and have implemented E-government. The respondents consist of IT department employees of those agencies. The data for this research were analyzed using the descriptive and inferential statistics analysis. Findings Statistically, both human error and process failure are significantly correlated with E-government service disruptions in the Malaysian public sector. More importantly for this research, the empirical results reveal that human action, decision, management, error and failure are the major causes to the E-government disruptions, followed by an improper process or procedures. In addition, it is found that technology failure is not significantly contributing to the E-government disruption frequency in the Malaysian public sector. Human error is an important factor and needs to be given more attention by the management, as human is the creator, who uses, manages and maintains the technology and process to enable the delivery of services as specified in the objectives, vision and mission of the organization. However, the approach used to address E-government disruptions is more toward technology-oriented and revolves around the recovery process. Research limitations/implications The study only focuses on three main factors, which are people, process and technology, and the target sample focuses only front-end service agencies. Further study can be extended by incorporating the other factor such as organizational environment, and the sample size could be expanded by including all agencies in public services. As human failure is a major cause of E-government disruptions, the proposed future research should also study the causes of human failure and how to address the problem by developing a resilient organization. Practical implications The results of this study have two implications: first is the discovery of the disruption factors that affect E-government service availability, and second is that the results of this study prioritized the factors that contribute to E-government service disruptions. This information would be beneficial to local, state and national governments for further action to ensure the availability and sustainability of E-government implementation. Originality/value This study identifies the factors that contribute to the service disruption of E-government and, thus, gives the priority of each factor based on its contribution to the E-government service disruption. This is an important finding because it enables public sector agencies to plan and implement improvements as needed and at the appropriate rate for each IT service component to ensure the E-government availability guarantee.

In recent years, the world’s ageing phenomena has led to the increase number of retirements in organisations. This phenomenon inevitably has given a great impact to many organisations when number of productive labour force decreases. Productive labours take with them experience and knowledge; hence, organisations suffers loss of its knowledge and cost them lots of money to replace. To combat the dangers of corporate amnesia, it is crucial for family firm to transfer its knowledge from the elder generation to the younger generation. For decades, family firm strives for business continuity from one generation to another and faces challenges in managing their resources, which plays a vital role in determining their continuous existence, i.e. their knowledge. However, current knowledge transfer strategies fail to consider unique challenges that faced by family business which other kind of businesses may not encounter. Realising the criticality of intergenerational knowledge transfer in family firms and the lack of intergenerational knowledge transfer strategies and mechanisms, this research attempts to investigate and propose an intergenerational knowledge transfer strategy framework and technologies to support the intergenerational knowledge transfer. We adopted a qualitative approach in understanding the characteristics of family business, strategies and mechanisms used in transferring their knowledge. Success investigation would assist us in understanding the scenario and subsequently enable us to propose a knowledge transfer strategy framework and possible technologies to support the knowledge transfer. This would definitely assist family business to manage their knowledge better and ensure the existence of their family business in the future.
