Expansion of existing international banking and financial centres in recent decades has been accompanied by the emergence of a number of new financial centres and regions around the globe and the trend is expected to continue. Concomitant with the expansion of international financial markets, the international banking system has experienced a robust growth. 4 trillion. Cross-border financial flows are expected to grow further in the current decade as a result of the economic integration of Europe, the shift of the communist bloc countries into market economies, the gradual revitalization of Latin America, opening of new markets in Asia, and the globalization of trade and removal of trade barriers in North America. The implications of this growth for banking centres are enormous. Hence, in this chapter, we evaluate the prospects and issues with regard to the growth of offshore banking centres in the coming decade.

Tax reforms and implications for international banks: The case of Cyprus

Emmanuel N. Roussakis; Ibrahim F. Bisha

On March 25, 1957, the same Western European nations which six years earlier had pooled their coal and steel resources into the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC), signed the Treaty of Rome and thus established the European Economic Community (EEC). Their goal was what the Schuman Declaration of May 9, 1950, had called a “European Federation.” The path they chose to follow toward political unity has been that of economic integration.

Global banking: origins and evolution

Emmanuel N. Roussakis

This case study offers insights into the assessment of bank performance and the determination of strategies to attain defined objectives (operational and ultimate). It reviews the fundamental analytical tools and defines their relative importance as measures of performance and strategy implementation. To validate the relationship between performance assessment and strategy implementation, the study focuses on a South Florida-based bank in the post 2008 crisis period. The banks profile and accompanying financial statements provide the analyst with the necessary information to assess its performance and make a recommendation as to the proposed course of action. The pedagogical objective of the case is to expose the analyst to the challenges confronting the bank and the various strategic options available to management.

Business Loans to the Local Hospitality Industry by Miami Banks

Emmanuel N. Roussakis; G. Smirlis

The case seeks to identify some of the issues encountered in the development and growth of a family-owned firm in the pharmaceutical business in Lima, Peru. Having overcome the initial challenges of its establishment, the company has become a visible and viable competitor in the Peruvian market and is poised to expand in cross border markets by exploring the prospect of a strategic alliance with a suitable pharmaceutical firm or a chain store in these markets. Senior management must evaluate the issues associated with an alliance that entails manufacturing for foreign companies.

Commercial Banking in an Era of Deregulation

Emmanuel N. Roussakis

This case deals with the key considerations when planning an international expansion through direct investment in foreign markets. These considerations must be addressed by a finance company seeking to support the international sales of its parent firm, a US-based multinational enterprise (MNE). The company already operates three foreign subsidiaries in Canada, Mexico (both NAFTA members), and the UK but wishes to increase this network further through entry into additional markets. Ten candidate countries are being considered to determine the five most suitable for entry. A supplementary consideration is the mode of direct investment in the selected markets. Hence the need for a rational decision on where to invest and what form should this investment take.

The Relationship Between Bank Capital Adequacy and Market Measures of Risk

Gordon V. Karels; Arun J. Prakash; Emmanuel N. Roussakis

The article reviews the development of the international (offshore) banking sector in Cyprus and focuses on the effects of the transitional corporate tax regime, introduced for this sector, since the country’s admission into the European Union. The consolidated performance of international banks and data collected through semi‐structured questionnaires are examined to provide important insights into how management perceives of the new tax regime and of its impact upon the country’s attractiveness as an international banking center.
