AbstractObjective: To compare the platelet count and mean platelet volume (MPV) values of pregnancies diagnosed with gestational diabetes with those of healthy pregnancies. Material—method: Between June 2003 and September 2004, 100 healthy pregnancies and 100 pregnancies with gestational diabetes were studied at Gazi University, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Results: While no statistically significant difference was observed in the platelet count between the two groups, the MPV of the gestational diabetes group (9.4 ± 1.6 fl) was evaluated to be significantly higher than the MPV of the healthy pregnancy group (8.3 ± 1.1 fl). Additionally, when linear regression analysis was performed an inverse relationship was observed between platelet number and MPV. Conclusion: There is a need for further research focusing on the platelet function in the observation and treatment of gestational diabetes, which can pose the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes for the mother and has negative consequences for the fetus.

ObjectiveThe relationship of homocyteine, B12 and folic acid with osteoporosis has already been studied in various populations. We compared the important factors in the metabolism of homocysteine, such as homocysteine, B12 and folic acid levels, of Turkish postmenopausal women, and their relationship with the femur and lumbar spine bone mineral density.MethodsThis cross-sectional study was conducted at Gazi University, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The study group consisted of 178 postmenopausal women. Serum homocysteine, folic acid and Vitamin B12 were measured. BMD was measured using DEXA at the right femoral neck and lumbar spine (L1–L4).ResultsUpon evaluation of both the femur and lumbar spine, it was determined that osteoporosis could be associated with a homocysteine level above the median and with a B12 value under the lowest quintile value.ConclusionPlasma Hcy and vitamin B12, but not folate levels, were associated with osteoporosis. Future interventional studies are needed to determine methods to reduce Hcy levels with dietary supplements and extra vitamin B12, which will restore bone health and reduce risk of fractures.

Gastroschisis is a rare anomaly and it is usually not associated with other syndromic or nonsyndromic anomalies. The first case of gastroschisis with aneuploidy (Turner syndrome) is presented. A fetal huge cystic hygroma was diagnosed by prenatal sonography at 12 weeks of pregnancy and chorionic villi sampling (CVS) was performed. Cytogenetic analysis revealed 45, X0. The pregnancy was terminated by induction of labor at 16 weeks of pregnancy. The female fetus had a big membrane of cystic hygroma surrounding the fetal neck. Additionally, a full abdominal thickness defect with multiple loops of bowel outside the abdomen, which could not be diagnosed on prenatal ultrasound scan, was detected on postnatal examination.

Education set design for smart home applications

Ercan Nurcan Yilmaz

Along with the increasing number of smart home applications, the need for the education of those systems has been unavoidable. Smart homes are a building and occupy large area. It has a lot of special control systems, communication systems and wiring. Thus, education of smart home systems requires special laboratories. At the places where special laboratories do not exist, the education is carried on theoretically. This is a problem. To achieve good smart home education a close collaboration between practice and theory is required. In this study, it has been tried to make an approach to the problem. So, the education set has been developed for better education than only theoretical education.

Rapid depletion of fossil fuels which the main source of origin of electric energy production is a major problem. To overcome this problem, it is an opportunity for renewable energy sources. Electric energy generation with wind turbines system is becoming more widely used. The energy quality is an important issue. In particular, power quality must be ensured for costumers especially industrial type applications. In this study, a micro grid fed by the wind turbine system to meet the energy requirements of an industrial plant is developed. High quality and stable electricity for three-phase AC Matrix Converter was used.

Internet based monitoring and control of a wind turbine via PLC

Yusuf Debbağ; Ercan Nurcan Yilmaz

The policy challenges associated with global warming, the prospect of increasingly expensive fossil fuels, and serious concerns about the safety of nuclear power are encouraging many country of world economies to develop smart grids (SGs) as a component of their energy policy portfolios. In the smart grids is an important part of renewable energy sources especially for wind turbines. Due to structure of a wind turbine, they must be established on a wide area. In order to monitor and control wind turbines, which are under different terrains and harsh conditions. All information and data, which is belong to wind turbine, must be gathered in one central unit. As a result of this situation, an economic system need arises. The wireless communication between control station and away stations, where they were located on different areas on the earth is provided by GPRS. We can do following applications from central station; Monitoring, controlling and updating PLC program. Also. If you enter central station IP address and port number of SCADA program into address line of web browser, you can monitor the system via any web browser of an internet connected computer.

Simulation of the Parallel Connection of Electrical Power Stations

Ilhami Colak; Ercan Nurcan Yilmaz

Experimental analysis under laboratory conditions of the parallel connection of any local power station to an infinite bus can be expensive and complicated. In this study, such a connection has been modelled and simulated using the DELPHI packet program. The study focuses on immediately finding and solving problems which occur before and after connection. The visualisation capability of DELPHI makes the program useful for teaching at undergraduate level.

Smart grid integration of micro hybrid power system using 6-switched 3-level inverter

Alper Kerem; Ahmet Aksoz; Ali Saygin; Ercan Nurcan Yilmaz

A hybrid power system modeled in Matlab/Simulink environment is presented in this study. This model includes a hybrid system consisting of wind and solar panels and it is connected to the smart grid through a 6-switched 3-level inverter. A 6-switched 3-level inverter is preferred in this study as an inverter due to its success in minimizing the harmonics. The signals required for the operation of the semiconductor switches within the inverter are obtained by the space-vector pulse width modulation technique. The system fed the receivers by generating electricity energy and sent the generated excess energy to the grid (grid) on favorable conditions, that is, when wind and/or sun are sufficient for energy production. The receivers are fed by the grid on unfavorable conditions. By means of analyzing the performance of the system, it is determined that the system is stable.

Design and Implementation of Fuel Cell and Photovoltaic Panel-Supported Ozonation System

Ercan Nurcan Yilmaz; Davut Sevim

ABSTRACT It is normal for a produced agricultural product or food to be transported to distances far from where it is produced. However, it is important to keep the product fresh in this transportation. There are many methods used to extend the life of the food during transport. The chemical method is the most used. However, the chemical method is harmful to human health. One of the methods used for storing, preserving and transporting agricultural products is ozonation and air conditioning. In this study, a system was designed to extend the life of the product in the storage and transport of food products. With the developed system, temperature, relative humidity and ozone were produced and their amounts were controlled according to the type of product being carried. In the design, polymer exchange membrane fuel cell was used for the required oxygen. The energy requirement of the system was provided by a photovoltaic panel to get rid of the generator dependency on supplied electrical power. The applicability of the system to refrigerated vehicles, especially those used in food transportation, was examined.
