Primary Muscular Hydatid Cyst Causing Arterial Insufficiency: Case Report and Literature Review

Yavuz Yorukoglu; Mustafa Zengin; Alp Dolgun; Ergun Salman; Eşref Paşaoğlu; Ertan Yücel

Hydatid disease, though known to occur in most organs and areas of the body, is extremely rare in skeletal muscle. In this article the authors present a case of a primary muscular hydatid cyst, originating from the adductor muscle group, causing obstruction of the femoral artery and vein.

Thromboangiitis obliterans (Buerger's disease) in women (a reevaluation).

Yavuz Yorukoglu; Erhan T. Ilgit; Mustafa Zengin; Ergun Salman; Ertan Yücel

Thromboangiitis obliterans (TAO) is an occlusive vascular disease tradition ally known to be almost exclusive to young male smokers. The disease was con sidered to be extremely rare in women, seen only as isolated, novel case reports in the literature. In the past decade, however, a dramatic increase in the inci dence of female TAO has been observed. In this paper the authors report 7 cases of clinically and angiographically verified female TAO. The world literature in regard to the diagnostic criteria, changing incidence, and etiology is reviewed. They conclude that the increased use of tobacco among young women in the past two to three decades is responsi ble for this dramatic change.

Cervical Aortic Arch A Case Report

Ünal Açikel; Baran Ugurlu; Eyüp Hazan; Ergun Salman

Cervical aortic arch is a rare type of aortic arch anomaly that is presumed to result from persistence of the third aortic arch and regression of the normal fourth arch. Most of the patients with this anomaly are asymptomatic, but symptoms of dysphagia and respira tory distress due to the compression by the vascular ring have been reported. Other findings such as a supraclavicular pulsatile mass, blood pressure discrepancies between the upper limbs, and loss of femoral or opposite-upper-limb pulses with compression of the cervical mass may also be present. In this article a twenty-two-year-old woman with symptomatic cervical aortic arch is presented. The patient had a left cervical pulsatile mass and elevated blood pressure on her right upper limb and was treated surgically with reanastomosis of the aorta.

1. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of selenium added cardioplegic solutions on postischemic myocardial recovery. 2. The hearts were mounted on Langendorf perfusion apparatus and perfused with Krebs-Henseleit solution. The hearts were arrested by one of the following cardioplegic solutions; (a) K+ 20 mmol/l (control group); (b) K+ 20 mmol/l+selenium 10(-3) mol/l (experimental group). After 20 min of normothermic ischemia the hearts were reperfused by the same buffer. 3. Postischemic percentage changes of heart rate, contractile force and heart work were compared between the groups. 4. Addition of selenium to the cardioplegic solution significantly decreased the postischemic myocardial injury.

Ruptured Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Due to Behçet's Disease—A Case Report

Yavuz Yorukoglu; Mustafa Zengin; Eşref Paşaoğlu; Ergun Salman; Ertan Yücel

Behçets disease, originally described as a triad of orogenital ulcerations and uveitis, is a chronic, multisystem disorder involving the skin, mucous mem branes, gastrointestinal tract, eyes, joints, central nervous system, and blood vessels. Vascular manifestations of Behçets disease (vasculo-Behçets disease) consists of venous and arterial forms. The arterial form is rare but carries a grave prognosis. The authors present a case of Behçets disease that manifested itself with a rupture of an abdominal aortic aneurysm. The outcome, although successful in this case, poses a prognostic dilemma for the surgical team in volved. The world literature in respect to complications and prognosis of vascu lar reconstruction in Behçets disease is reviewed and discussed.

Aortocaval Fistula Due to Stabbing Injury: A Case Report

Ergun Salman; Murat Özeren; Ertan Yücel; Yavuz Yorukoglu

Traumatic aortocaval fistula due to stabbing injury by knife is a rare entity. The authors present a case of aortocaval fistula due to stabbing injury and its successful surgical treatment by bifurcated Dacron graft interposition between the aorta and both common iliac arteries. No complication occurred in the post operative course.

Fistula Between An Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm and the Transverse Colon: Case Report

Ergun Salman; Murat Özeren; Mehmet Bayraktaroglu; Ilhan Mavioglu; Ugur Çetingök; Ertan Yücel

Aortoenteric fistula is one of the rare complications of abdominal aortic an eurysm. The segment of intestine most frequently involved in aortoenteric fis tula is the duodenum, whereas the colon is a very rare site of fistula formation. To the authors knowledge, only 13 cases have been reported in the literature to have a primary arteriocolic fistula caused by abdominal aortic aneurysm. Pri mary repair of the fistulization between aorta and transverse colon, resection of aneurysm, and left axillofemoral, femorofemoral bypass were performed on the patient, who represents the fourteenth case in the literature. No important com plication developed and the patient was discharged from the hospital on the fifteenth postoperative day but died on the twenty-fourth postoperative day at another hospital from myocardial infarction.

Thromboangiitis Obliterans (Buerger's Disease) in a Cigarette Factory Worker: A Case Report

Yavuz Yorukoglu; Erhan T. Ilgit; Mustafa Zengin; Ergun Salman; Ertan Yücel

Thromboangiitis obliterans (Buergers Disease) is an occlusive vascular disease of unknown etiology. It occurs predominantly in male heavy cigarette smokers. The relationship between heavy cigarette smoking and Buergers disease has been well established and emphasized by many authors. Only rare cases of this disease in nonsmokers have been reported. The authors report a case of Buergers disease in a cigarette factory worker. The course of disease in this patient suggests that the tobacco-rich environment and the handling of large quantities of tobacco on a daily basis was the main factor triggering the disease process.
