Purpose – The relationship between energy consumption (EC) and economic growth is a well-known and more studied subject in literature. In this study, Turkeys EC and gross domestic product (GDP) relation is analyzed. The aim of this study is to find out the relative importance of energy components on GDP for Turkey. Hence, the authors can make some strategic implications up to the importance of energy components on GDP. Design/methodology/approach – In this study, two methods are used to find out the importance of energy types on economic growth for Turkey. First, grey relational analysis (GRA) is used to determine the most influential energy types on GDP. Then regression analysis is used to compare outcomes which are yielded by GRA. Findings – The analyses of the results show that the most important energy sources are oil and renewables for Turkey. Both energy sources have equal importance with economic growth. However, it is implied that this balance should be destabilized for the sake of renewable prod...

Purpose – Personnel selection is an important process in management due to the high cost of unfavorable employee procurement. The multi criteria nature and the presence of both qualitative and quantitative factors make it considerably more complex. The purpose of this paper is to propose a grey theory‐based hybrid approach to solve personnel selection problems in uncertain environments.Design/methodology/approach – The work procedure is as follows: first, grey analytic network process (GANP) is applied to calculate selection criteria weights and then candidates are ranked by using grey possibility degrees. Finally, an example of a selection problem of sniper for a military unit was used to illustrate the proposed approach.Findings – The analyses of the results show that grey theory‐based methods have enormous chance of success for personnel selection problems in uncertain situations.Originality/value – Although there are some applications for personnel selection problems that used grey system theory in th...

Purpose – One important assumption in the conventional cooperative game theory is that payoffs are assumed to be deterministic. In terms of the players’ cognitive ability of the realistic world, this is a very strict assumption. The classical game theory can find no way out when a particular game circumstance involves uncertainty, such as limited knowledge, small sample, and inadequate information, the payoff values of the game can only be described with interval grey numbers. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach – In this study the concept of N-person grey games is proposed in which payoffs are represented with interval grey numbers opposed to the classical game theory. A straight forward solution methodology is submitted compatible to grey numbers. Then, a currency war between anonymous countries is handled and modeled as an N-Person grey game. A generic currency war scenario is developed to follow the proposed solution procedure thoroughly. Findings – Based on the outcome...

The topic of this study is a real life facility location problem in the public sector. A public institution currently has 24 service facilities in a region. There are 55 candidate districts to open a facility in the region. A district that has not a facility receives service from another facility in that region. General management desire to reduce the number of facilities because the existing system no longer provides a cost-effective service. However, opening of new facilities are also considered in case the current facilities fail to fulfil general managements demands. A mathematical programming model is introduced to determine where the facilities will be located, and which districts receives service from which facilities as if there are currently no existing facilities. The solution of the mathematical model shows implicitly which of the existing facilities should be closed and in which districts the new facilities should be opened.

Ana dagitim usleri (ADU) coktan-coga dagitim sistemlerinde toplama, siniflandirma ve aktarma noktasi olarak hizmet veren ozel tesislerdir. ADU yer secim problemlerinde, kaynak-varis noktalari arasindaki akislar dogrudan birbirleri arasinda degil, olcek ekonomisinden faydalanmak amaciyla ana dagitim usleri araciligiyla gerceklestirilir.

Abstract Decision making process is a process which includes decision makers, actors, environmental factors, objectives, strategies and criteria. In competitive environments, effectiveness of decision process depends on determining all environmental factors and evaluating them according to objectives. Decision makers aim to find optimal strategies for conflicting objectives. Game theory is an approach based on mathematics in which strategies of players are evaluated reciprocally by considering environmental effects. In this study, a two-person zero-sum game approach is presented for choosing optimal strategies of actors in competitive environment by balancing objectives reciprocally. This approach refers to evaluation of each objective, creation of decision payoff matrixes by using fuzzy logic mathematical applications and their transformation to final decision payoff matrix subsequently. Finally, optimal strategies and their probabilities are found. A military case study is presented for illustrating the application of proposed approach.
