Technological adaptation of the student to the educational density of the course. A case study

David Fonseca; Ernesto Redondo; Francesc Valls; Sergi Villagrasa

The main objective of this study was to assess the degree of students adaptation to two types of courses on applications of architectural spatial representation. With the same semester lengths, the first proposal involved lectures on 45 applications, whereas the second covered approximately 20 applications, all of which were focused on the three-dimensional (3D) representation of the architectural project. Both proposals were based on applications and technological innovations that allow better use of active learning, which is the basis of architectural education. After an initial study of the students profiles and motivations, both courses were implemented (throughout the 20142015 academic year), and quantitative and qualitative data were collected. This mixed approach provided us with a better understanding of the results of students motivation and satisfaction. It also allowed us to evaluate the extent to which they adapted to the designed proposals and how our proposal affected the pace and number of the applications presented throughout the two courses. Virtual interactive innovations applied for digital urban transformations. Mixed approach

Mónica Sánchez-Sepúlveda; David Fonseca; Jordi Franquesa; Ernesto Redondo

Abstract The cities in which we live are changing rapidly, presenting the scenery to debate future visions of transformative designs and its impact on the city. In order to take advantage of the changes and opportunities offered by the inclusion of digital technologies, an accommodation of the digital transformation into the visualization of Urbanism is required. It is a challenge for organizations and society to question the status quo and experiment often. The discussion about the increasing integration of digital technologies in urban spaces involves a number of questions relating to the complex processes of transformation that impact cities, like economic, social, political, and environmental. The main goal of the paper is to present the use of Digital Transformation in processes of urban design through technological innovation in which the diverse forms of active citizenship operate from below as agents of innovation, inclusion and social development. The results showed that it is possible to empower Digital Transformation – as for example the use Augmented and Virtual Reality (AR/VR) systems in collaborative urban design – to improve public motivation, implication, and satisfaction in urban decision-making processes.

Bipolar laddering assessments applied to urban acoustics education

Josep Llorca; Héctor Zapata; Ernesto Redondo; Jesús Alba; David Fonseca

The role of acoustics in architectural planning processes is often neglected if the designer lacks necessary experience in acoustics. Moreover, few experiments till the date have brought audio design tools to the classrooms. A basic BLA (Bipolar Laddering Assessment) experiment is presented with architectural degree students showing that sound aspects of urban design are as important as visual ones. Additionally, this experiment indicates the basic guidelines for the improvement of a urban acoustic education tool which pretends to broaden architecture students insight into urban acoustic problems.

Programming Virtual Interactions for Gamified Educational Proposes of Urban Spaces.

Xavier Calvo; David Fonseca; Mónica Sánchez-Sepúlveda; Daniel Amo; Josep Llorca; Ernesto Redondo

The architectural students must acquire for their professional future the comprehension of the space and the usage of the urban projects. In this sense, the possibilities offered by interactive visualization platforms, typically used for the creation of computerized games, can be especially useful given their power and versatility (for example through the process of rendering a scene with lights, textures and materials in real time). The present article contextualizes three-dimensional interactive visualization systems in architectural education, and explains the development of the main interactions for students, with elements of urban furniture, under the programming in Unreal.
