We report the transmission of a record 6 Tbit/s capacity over 6120 km distance, involving channels modulated at 42.7-Gb/s bit-rate with differential phase-shift keying (DPSK). The performance is found similar to DPSK with subsequent pulse carving, namely RZ-DPSK.

For transmission systems at 10 Gb/s and beyond, polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) is one of the limiting factors. Optical PMD compensators aim at increasing the PMD value tolerated by the system; however, they do not cancel out its effects. Therefore, the performance of a PMD compensator is assessed statistically. Requirements for optical PMD compensators include a response time in the range of 1 ms in order to follow polarization fluctuations over the line. The system design should account for the interaction of other transmission impairments with the PMD compensator operation. For instance, transmitter chirp and residual chromatic dispersion have a deleterious impact on the compensator performance. While self-phase modulation is harmless, cross-phase modulation greatly reduces the compensator efficiency. System design rules have been applied to a one-year field trial, showing the compensators efficiency and reliability. However, reducing their cost is the next challenge that will bring optical PMD compensators to be used in installed systems.

In this paper, we report experiments on the statistical assessment of the reduction of PMD mitigator efficiency in presence of XPM effects. The XPM-induced depolarization limits compensation in polarization dispersive ultra-long haul system at 10 Gb/s.

We derive a closed-form expression for the DOP of polarized signals affected by XPM, in a modulated pump-probe scheme. Results are checked against simulations and experiments on a dispersion managed 3 /spl times/100 km link.

A new scheme of compensation combining first-order compensation and relevant ISOP control was proposed. Its interest lies in the fact that it avoids staying a long time on sub-optimum, yielding poor performance of the compensator. It has proved to be a good and a simple means to improve the value of tolerable polarisation mode dispersion (PMD) in the line up to 37% of bit-time.

By means of back to back BER analysis, we have compared 2 amplifiers (using ring doping and conventional core doping) having similar performance in terms of gain, output power and noise figure. Amplification of the signal out of the fiber core like in the ring-doping technique does not impair the BER measurement nor add penalty to the analysis. We can conclude that this type of fiber can be used in amplifiers for the future high-bit rate WDM systems.
