Together with Renault Siemens VDO developed the first direct injection system (DI) in 1999 for a gasoline engine manufactured in Europe: the 2.0 l naturally aspirated engine of the Megane and Laguna. In 2001 the first European series production vehicles with lean-burn engines were to follow (Citroen C5 und Peugeot 406). Two years later the Mercedes-Benz C-Class was introduced with the first DI system for a turbocharged 1.8 l gasoline engine with stratified combustion. In the meantime Siemens VDO has continued to drive the development of piezo and solenoid actuated DI injectors for gasoline engines. This feature gives a summary of DI advantages and describes a new generation of solenoid injectors for homogeneous DI, capable of multistream spray.
