Observations on the results of multiple readings of chest films in coal miners' pneumoconiosis.

Benjamin Felson; William Keith C. Morgan; Leonard J. Bristol; Eugene P. Pendergrass; Edgar L. Dessen; Otha W. Linton; Robert B. Reger

The authors studied the influence of multiple readings on the problem of detecting and evaluating coal workers pneumoconiosis (CWP). There was an unexpected disagreement between three groups of readers, based on (a) poor film quality, (b) lack of experience with the classification systems employed, and (c) lack of familiarity with the roentgen manifestations of CWP. It is hoped that future surveys may be improved by films of higher quality and by a heightened awareness of the roentgen signs and symptoms of CWP among physicians.

Adenocarcinoma of the right breast and osteogenic sarcoma of the right third rib in a patient who did not receive postoperative radiation

Eugene P. Pendergrass

Double malignancies of the thorax involving a breast, the lungs, a rib, the skull and other distant areas are sometimes difficult to diagnose and evaluate when the patient is alive and treatment programs are being administered. This report illustrates some of the difficulties in diagnosis encountered by us.

The colonna capsular arthroplasty. A long-term follow-up study of fifty-six patients.

Stanley M. K. Chung; Harvey W. Scholl; Edgar L. Ralston; Eugene P. Pendergrass

1. A series of fifty-six patients with sixty-three dislocated hips treated by Colonna capsular arthroplasty are reviewed. The average follow-up is seventeen years.nn2. The clinical results revealed excellent results in eight patients, good results in twenty-three patients, fair results in nineteen patients, and poor results in six patients.nn3. The limitation of motion which occurred in many patients did not seen to affect the functional result except in patients with bilateral involvement.nn4. Good results tended to occur in younger patients, in those who have had adequate preoperative traction, in patients with unilateral involvenient, and in those with no disease in other joints.nn5. Poor results tended to occur in patients with bilateral involvement, in those in whom avascular necrosis developed, and in those who were operated on later in life.nn6. The onset of degenerative changes in the hip associated with pain usually occurred in patients during the middle of the third decade following surgery.nn7. The capsular arthroplasty can be a useful surgical operation if indications and technique are followed closely. One must realize the limitations and possible complications.nn8. Centralization of the femoral head at the triradiate cartilage will facilitate subsequent reconstructive surgery.

Viewbox Seminar: A New Method for Teaching Roentgenology

Benjamin Felson; George Jacobson; Eugene P. Pendergrass; Leonard J. Bristol; Otha W. Linton; Robert W. Harrington

The American College of Radiology designed a crash program to train radiologists to interpret and classify the radiological manifestations of coal workers pneumoconiosis. This Viewbox Seminar combines two pedagogic techniques, group viewbox study, and a test-teach-test sequence of instruction that compels active participation in the learning process. Weekend scheduling and good location and transportation connections facilitate attendance, making this an excellent way to teach large groups of radiologists certain subtleties of radiology in a short time.
