In ICRF heating of a minority species in a tokamak, each incident magnetosonic ray excites a continuum of gyroresonant ballistic rays. Each of these rays in turn excites a reflected magnetosonic ray. We analyze this process to obtain the transmission coefficient and the reflected wave field.

We calculate the slab model wave energy transfer coefficients and absorption profile for minority gyroresonance. We employ the ray phase‐space viewpoint in which collective and ballistic waves propagate and exchange energy. We outline the derivation of the conversion coefficient, and the absorption profile for the two different absorption mechanisms. Our explicit formulas agree well with numerical integration.
