Procopius was a rhetor and sophist who lived in Gaza (ca. 465–70 ce–526/30 ce). He wrote numerous works dedicated to pupils of the famous school of his native city, which was run by himself, or addressed to a wider public and rendered on the occasion of festivals or important political-cultural events. He was highly valued because of the elegance and finesse of his style during the Byzantine period, and he was considered to be one of the last voices of Greek sophistry.
