Review of the genus Abiskomyia Edwards (Diptera: Chironomidae: Orthocladiinae), with description of new taxa from the Russian Far East and bordering territories

Eugenyi A. Makarchenko; Marina A. Makarchenko

A systematic review of the genus Abiskomyia Edwards, 1937 is presented based on materials from the Russian Far East and bordering territories. Three new species: A. korbokhon sp. nov., A. levanidovi sp. nov., A. rivalis sp. nov. and one subspecies A. virgo orientalis subsp. nov. are described and figured. Emended generic diagnoses and keys to determination of adult males, pupae and fourth instar larvae of all known species and subspecies of the Abiskomyia of the Palaearctic region are provided.

A NEW SPECIES OF SYMBIOCLADIUS KIEFFER, 1925 (DIPTERA: CHIRONOMIDAE: ORTHOCLADIINAE) FROM THE EASTERN PALAEARCTIC

Eugenyi A. Makarchenko; Marina A. Makarchenko; Tatiana M. Tiunova

The adult male, pupa, and fourth instar larva of Symbiocladius (s. s.) villosus Makarchenko et Makarchenko, sp. n. from the Russian Far East and Japan are described and figured. Adult male of a new species separated from all known species of subgenus by presence of a pair rodshaped chitinized structures which situated above apical parts of phallapodemes, and is closely related to the Palaearctic species S. (s. s.) rhithrogenae and the Nearctic S. (s. s.) chattahoocheensis. S. (s. s.) villosus sp. n. can be distinguished from the first species by shape of gonostylus which expands from the base to the middle and with longer and more numerous setae. From S. (s. s.) chattahoocheensis a new species can be separated by roundish-triangular dorsal part of inferior volsellae and presence of 2 megasetae on gonostylus.

New or little-known species of Chaetocladius s. str. Kieffer, 1911 (Diptera: Chironomidae: Orthocladiinae) from the Amur River basin (Russian Far East)

Eugenyi A. Makarchenko; Marina A. Makarchenko; Alexander A. Semenchenko

Chironomids of the subgenus Chaetocladius s. str. from the Amur River basin are revised using both morphological characters and molecular data. Three new species, C. egorych sp. nov., C. lopatinskiy sp. nov. and C. yavorskayae sp. nov., are described and figured. The pupa of C. fedotkin is described for the first time. Adult males of C. ligni and C. piger, little-known in the Far East, are redescribed and annotated, and key to males of the Chaetocladius s. str. from the Amur River basin is provided. A reference 658 bp barcode sequence from a fragment of the mitochondrial gene cytochrome oxidase I (COI) was used as a tool for species delimitation. Comparisons with corresponding regions of COI between 5 species in the subgenus produced K2P genetic distances of 8.3-12.6%, values well associated with interspecific variation. Molecular data were also used for the reconstruction of the phylogenetic relationships within the subgenus Chaetocladius s. str.

A review of the genus Parorthocladius Thienemann, 1935 (Diptera: Chironomidae: Orthocladiinae) from the Russian Far East

Eugenyi A. Makarchenko; Marina A. Makarchenko

Three new species of the genus Parorthocladius Thienemann, P. lazovskiensis sp. nov., P. plolabius sp. nov., and P. tyurkini sp. nov. from the Russian Far East are described and figured. Descriptions of pupae and larvae of one indeterminate species, Parorthocladius sp. 1, are also presented. Keys to determination of adult males, pupae and fourth instar larvae of Far-Eastern species Parorthocladius are provided.

A new species of Lappodiamesa Serra-Tosio (Diptera: Chironomidae: Diamesinae) from the Russian Far East, with a key to known species of the genus

Eugenyi A. Makarchenko; Marina A. Makarchenko

The male, pupa, and larva of a new species, Lappodiamesa omelkoi, from the Russian Far East are described and figured. Keys to males, pupae, and fourth-instar larvae of known species of the genus are presented.

Morphological description and DNA barcoding of Chaetocladius ( Chaetocladius ) elisabethae sp. nov. (Diptera: Chironomidae: Orthocladiinae) from the Moscow Region

Eugenyi A. Makarchenko; Marina A. Makarchenko; Alexander A. Semenchenko; Dmitry M. Palatov

Illustrated descriptions of the adult male, pupa and fourth instar larva, as well as DNA barcoding results of Chaetocladius (Chaetocladius) elisabethae sp. nov. in comparison with closely related species of Chaetocladius s. str. from the Moscow Region are provided. A reference 658 bp barcode sequence from a fragment of the mitochondrial gene cytochrome oxidase I (COI) was used as a tool for species delimitation. Comparisons with corresponding regions of COI between C. (s. str.) elisabethae sp. nov. and other species of the subgenus produced K2P genetic distances of 0.11-0.16, values well associated with interspecific variation. The barcodes of the new species were identical to the Chaetocladius sp. 2ES in BOLD systems. Molecular data were also used for the reconstruction of the phylogenetic relationships within the subgenus Chaetocladius s. str.

Three species of Hydrobaenus Fries (Diptera: Chironomidae: Orthocladiinae) from Belarus

Eugenyi A. Makarchenko; Marina A. Makarchenko

Illustrated descriptions of adult male, pupa and fourth instar larva of Hydrobaenus molleri sp. nov., adult male of H. hvoenskiensis sp. nov. and redescription of adult male H. pilipes (Malloch) with taxonomic notes are provided on the basis of materials collected from Belarus.

New data on taxonomy and systematics of the genus Diamesa Meigen (Diptera: Chironomidae: Diamesinae) from Tien Shan and Pamir Mountains, with description of two new species

Eugenyi A. Makarchenko; Alexander A. Semenchenko; Dmitry M. Palatov

An illustrated morphological description of two new species of the genus Diamesa Meigen, 1835 are provided from Tien Shan and Pamir mountains: D. akhrorovi sp. nov., as male adult; D. alibaevae sp. nov., as male adult and pupa. DNA barcoding results of the two new described species with comparative database on some related Diamesa species are also given. The two new described species key both near D. planistyla Reiss, 1968, which was known from Nepal and redescribed here from Tian Shan. The diversity of Diamesa genus using three mitochondrial (COI, COII, 16S rRNA), two nuclear (18S rRNA, EF-1a) markers and estimating phylogenetic relationships is also highlighted. Six of the studied Diamesa species including D. akhrorovi sp. nov. and D. alibaevae sp. nov. represent a well-supported monophyletic clades with high Bayesian posterior probability, while D. cinerella Meigen and D. hamaticornis Kieffer have a lower interspecific sequence divergence.

Morphological description and DNA barcoding of Hydrobaenus majus sp. nov. (Diptera: Chironomidae: Orthocladiinae) from the Russian Far East

Eugenyi A. Makarchenko; Marina A. Makarchenko; Alexander A. Semenchenko

Illustrated descriptions of adult male, pupa and fourth instar larva, as well as DNA barcoding, of Hydrobaenus majus sp. nov. in comparison with the close related species H. sikhotealinensis Makarchenko et Makarchenko from the Russian Far East are provided. The species-specificity of H. majus sp. nov. COI sequences is analyzed and the sequences are presented as diagnostic characters--molecular markers of H. majus and H. sikhotealinensis.
