Wearing Conditions of Protective Clothing and Protective Gear for FMD Prevention

Jeehyun Moon; Eun-Kyung Jeon

Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) is highly contagious and highly lethal to cloven-hoofed animals. In the winter of 2010, an outbreak of FMD in Korea caused a great deal of economic damage as well as serious mental and physical damage to people who participated in preventive activities. This study provides preliminary data for designing safe and functional protective clothing and gear for individuals who participate in FMD preventive activities. This study was accomplished with multilateral methods such as a documentary survey, field trips, sample analysis of protective clothing and gear, questionnaire studies and focus interviews. As a result, we found that most workers wore low-priced protective clothing that was low in safety functions and rarely wore extra protective gear. Also pointed out was dissatisfaction with: protective clothing and gear, problems related to damage, discomfort, contamination, problems in protective gear related to waterproof functions, protection against harmful substances, discomfort, coldness, and damage. Safe protective clothing could be developed that protects the actual wearers if these results are reflected in the improvement of protective clothing and gear.

Manual Design for Pattern Developing and Virtual Modelling through Product Analysis - Focused on Disposable Protective Coverall -

Eun-Kyung Jeon; Jeehyun Moon

The demand for coverall-type protective clothing are increasing in many industrial fields; however, it is impossible to evaluate the wearers` apparel fit because there is no commercialized pattern in the market. This study produces a manual for the process of acquiring patterns by separating PPE products into pieces to provide information on acquiring patterns. The analysis was on coverall-type non woven protective clothing in the domestic market, and 4 panels examined the validity, reliability, and efficiency of various possible methods on each step of process. Five steps were conducted to acquire patterns removing wrinkles, marking seams lines, separating seams, and pattern completing. The process of converting these into pattern files was designed through three procedures of digitizing, editing, and exporting and detailed stages. Fitting tests were undertaken, real patterns by actual modeling and pattern files by virtual modeling; all showed similar forms with outfits wearing ready-made protective coveralls. This study sought the most efficient and objective method of virtual modeling and proposed it as a manual. It is expected for the pattern reverse-designing manual through products analysis presented in this study that would be a helpful addition of information to the pattern tracing of pattern-less clothing products.

An Analysis of the Demands for the Improvement of Versatile Safety Vests for Traffic Police Officers

Hyunjung Han; Eun-Kyung Jeon

Abstract : Traffic police officers are faced with many dangerous accidents due to outside duties on roads. Yet, researcheson traffic officers’ uniforms have mainly been focused on design aspects rather than functional aspects. This study there-fore aims to figure out traffic officers’ perceived needs for their uniforms and to offer some basic guidelines in man-ufacturing versatile safety vests for wearers. The study used a documentary survey replied by 236 traffic officers. Theresults of the study are as follows: 1. There are 10 different types of vests currently used by traffic officers. Vests areemployed for purposes such as carrying police equipments, enabling officers to be noticeable in dark, protecting the body, etc. 2. Officers wear these vests which were officially designated by law. Among them, fluorescence versatile safety vestswere most frequently worn by officers. 3. Officers who wore ready-made vests of which size was already determined, tended to perceive that the vests were relatively larger than their own size. 4. In terms of the functions of the vests, offic-ers expressed needs for the improvement of the LED and retro-reflection tape along with the addition of thermal functionto existing vests. The improvement of the form and functions of versatile safety vests which reflect needs of the userswill boost the dignity and the sense of duty of the traffic police officers.Key words:traffic police officer, versatile safety vests, wearers needs, wearing condition, uniform

Analysis of Appropriateness for Brassieres' Size at On-Line Shopping Mall

Eun-Kyung Jeon; Hyunjung Han

The spread of internet brought the rapid development of on-line shopping mall, but the information of clothing-related products especially underwears in on-line shopping mall is still poor. Thus, in this paper, we investigated the dimension status and problems of brassieres selling at on-line shopping malls and suggest improving solutions. We surveyed the sales sizes and sales status of brassieres for four top-sales on-line malls and analyzed them based on both of Korean Standards and SizeKorea2005, the measurement data of Korean women`s sizes. The results showed that almost of brassieres were for adults(98.8%), and for general purpose(97.8%) while the sales rates of specially targeted products for teen-ager or functional products for nursing mom were very low. Also, we noticed that Korean Standards covers most of SizeKorea measurements of women, but brassieres of only a small portion of size in Korean Standards were manufactured and sold at on-line shopping mall. It means that consumers who do not belong to the sector of most frequent body measurement range suffer difficulties in purchase of brassieres by on-line shopping. Thus, it is required to gather more accurate information about body size of potential consumers and to offer wider range of sizes and target-specific products for the activation of on-line shopping.

Tendencies of the Researches on Foot Measurement Reported in Korean Journals

Eun-Kyung Jeon; Hyeon-Jeong Han

A foot has an intimate relation with human`s health, thus became an important theme of researches for various academic fields. The aim of this paper is to investigate the trends and tendencies of research on foot measurement in various academic fields and to suggest the directions for the future studies on foot measurement. The collection of data has been accomplished from the papers published in the KSI(Korean Studied Information Service System) journals on foot measurement. The number of papers in 21 journals by 2006 is 79, and the first paper appeared in the Korean Journal of Home Economics in 1986. The number of publication has been increasing every year in various fields of academic including clothing, engineering, medical science and athletics, and measuring methods became diverse and specialized according to the purpose. However, there were some problems such as subjects being biased and similar studies overlapping without interchange between academic fields. Therefore, a research with variety in subject from an infant to the aged and a interdisciplinary research are needed.

Analysis of Pattern Shape and Types for Non-woven Protective Coverall on Domestic Market

Jeehyun Moon; Eun-Kyung Jeon

Abstract Protective coveralls are very uncomfortable to work in comparison to ordinary top and bottom separatedclothing. A pattern maker has to consider the size of the human body and human motion range when design-ing protective coverall patterns. It is difficult to produce well-fitted coveralls because of the lack of ready-made patterns despite the increased need for protective coveralls at various jobs. Patterns are decomposedby unsewing 18 products in the domestic market to provide the fundamental information on developing pa-tterns for protective coveralls. The characteristics and differences of pattern types are compared after group-ing patterns with information taken from the analysis of the shapes and measurements of patterns from theacquired patterns. The results of the analysis showed that on-market protective coveralls were less curvedbut much linear when compared to ordinary clothing patterns; however, the breasts and crotch circumferen-ces were very loose and bulky, which is quite different from the other all-in one style working clothes. Forthe pattern shapes, patterns are classified into waistline-seamed and bustline-seamed types. The result of thehierarchical cluster analysis with 27 measurement variables were classified into four groups. Types by shapeand measurements were related to each other; therefore, we expect the information of each type to be usedin developing protective clothing patterns.Key words: Disposable protective coverall, Non-woven, Coverall pattern, Type classification; 일회용 보호복, 부직포, 전신 보호복 패턴, 유형분류

An Analysis of Korean Anthropometric Measurements for the Development of a Disposable Protective Coveralls Sizing System

Jeehyun Moon; Eun-Kyung Jeon

【The sizing system for Korean Standard of Disposable Protective Coveralls (DPC) uses the ISO sizing system without modification even though the user suitability for Koreans is unverified. This study provides useful information to improve the size standard of Korean DPC by analyzing measurement DPC data from Korean men and women. The distribution of Korean measurements shows that the size sections were unsuitable for Korean men and women for a protective clothing size standard. Body types were categorized into five types based on a cluster analysis of representative mens and womens measurement factors. Two clusters mostly consisted of men, two other clusters mostly consisted of women, and the other cluster relatively evenly consisted of men and women. Therefore, characteristic body measurements and measurement distribution differences were identifiable for men and women. In conclusion, an unmodified ISO protective clothing size standard is unsuitable for Korean men and women and may cause fit problems. This study shows that a Korean Standard of protective clothing is beneficial for protective clothing manufacturers and wearers if smaller size intervals are added for women and the difference in the distribution of men and women is reflected in the current sizing system. ISO is appropriate to use a Korean Standard in this global era, however, it should be reviewed to provide improved Korean data.】

An Exploratory Study on the Disposable Sanitary Pads for User-Oriented Product Design

Eun-Kyung Jeon; Ji-Hyun Moon

This paper aims to examine the status of sizing specifications for disposable sanitary pads on the market and to offer information on product design that reflect the requests of consumer by gathering opinion through the practical experience of consumers. Seventy-six varieties of sanitary pads on market are measured and the evaluations of wearing comfort were investigated by the questionnaire and interview for sixty three varieties of sanitary pads. As a result, they were classified into five sizes related with length but vaguely related with thickness and width. Thickness is distinguished by the compressibility that is marked as slim or ultra slim by the same brand. However, there is no sizing consistency for all products. The result shows that there is some confusion for consumers to choose desired sizes, In addition, the perception of wearing is categorized into four factors that are product performance, size and fit, wearing feeling and margin of action, and adhesive property and wrapping. The manufacturing specifications for the sanitary pads on domestic market, the requests of consumers for sanitary pad design modifications, and proposals for follow-up studies were figured out through this research.
