The article aims to review and discuss the concepts of disaster in the Sociology and Psychology author’s perspective, in order to contribute to the current discussions on the definition of the term. For this, we used a literature review including the concepts of the leading theorists on the disaster. It appears that the word disaster in Sociology covers those events delimited in time and space, causing physical damage, loss, social disruption and changes in the functioning of the daily routine, so that the demand exceeds the capacity of response within a vulnerable context. On the Psychology s field the term allude to sudden events, with potential traumatic, delimited in time and space, being the disasters also a collective event, generating high levels of stress and with psychological consequences/reactions. We conclude that, although the concepts are important for classifying and defining boundaries it is essential to understanding a disaster within the social, political and economic context where it occurs. These are variables that allow evaluating the psychosocial dimension of its consequences, so that disasters are as much an object of scientific interest, and as a problem of social relevance.

The study analyzed the risk perception of accidents in children, as well as their opinion on the attitudes of prevention. The study included 886 children, 54% female and 46% male, 10-12 years old (M=10.66; SD=0.62), living in Cascavel-PR. The participants answered a questionnaire with Likert scale responses ranging from 1-5, analyzed quantitatively through techniques of statistics such as factor analysis, frequency and Student’s t-test. The children presented low means (≤ 2,24) relative to the perception of exposure to the risk of accidents, which may be related to the personal belief of invulnerability. On the other hand, the averages relative to the importance of the attitudes of prevention were high (≥ 3,40), revealing a good level of information on this subject. The study aimed to analyze the risk perception of accidents in children, as well as their opinion on the attitudes of prevention. The means relative to the perception of the exposure to the accidents were lower than the means relative to the importance of the prevention attitudes. The first results may be related to the belief of invulnerability, while the second may be related to the childrens level of information about the assessed aspects.

The study aimed to analyze the degree of association between different levels of impact of drought and perception of psychological well-being in family farmers in Southern Brazil. Participated in the study 198 farmers (104 men and 88 women), aged 18-77 years (M = 44.38, SD = 10.04). As instruments we used the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12) and an ad hoc scale with eight items, dealing with the impact of drought on the following aspects: Financial/indebtedness, psychological, leisure, clothing, sleep, study, family relationships, and routine. The hypothesis was that, as the impact of the disaster on family increases, the negative perception of psychological well-being also increases. ANOVA analysis demonstrated that there is a signifi cant effect of drought on the well-being and the linear trend also was signifi cant confi rming the research hypothesis. However, the difference between means of low and high 1 Endereco para correspondencia: Rua Santos Dumont, 391/01, Regiao do Lago 01, Cascavel, PR, Brasil 85812300. Favero, E., Sarriera, J. C. 810 impact group demonstrated that the disaster needs cause a high impact to have signifi cant infl uence on the well-being. Regression analysis revealed that the impact of the drought on clothing and income are the variables that most contribute to a negative perception of well-being. Results indicated that it is not the disaster itself, but the resources that the farmers have to face it that will determine the severity of its impacts and infl uence of drought on psychological well-being.The study aimed to analyze the degree of association between different levels of impact of drought and perception of psychological well-being in family farmers in Southern Brazil.
