The experiences of African-Americans and whites in criminal justice education: Do race and gender differences exist?

This study analyzes survey data to explore differences in experiences between African-Americans and whites in criminology/criminal justice education. The experiences of females in criminal justice education are also explored. Written comments from the respondents on issues specific to gender and race discrimination are included. Findings point toward different academic experiences for minorities and females, than for white males and to different experiences for minorities than for whites. Results suggest a need to address gender and racial biases as separate and distinct phenomena occurring in criminal justice academia.

African American women in the Criminal Justice Academy: Characteristics, perceptions, and coping strategies

In this article, we examine the demographic characteristics, perceptions, and academic experiences of 27 African American female faculty members in criminology/criminal justice programs in 1993–1994. These women primarily held the rank of assistant professor and were members of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences and the American Society of Criminology. They reported more positive relationships with students and departmental support staff members than with colleagues, and held more favorable attitudes toward issues such as teaching loads, research support, and opportunities for professional development than toward the recruitment process. They addressed academic problems through a variety of techniques including social support from males and nonminority individuals.
