Feray Soyupek; Evrim Aktepe; Serpil Savas; Ayhan Aşkın

Purpose. To find out if the quality of life (QOL) and self-concept of the children with cerebral palsy (CP) was different from that of children without disability, to investigate predictive variables that could affect self-concept and QOL. Methods. A total of 40 children with CP and 46 age-matched peers were included. The baseline characteristics including sex, type of CP, the level of disability according to Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) were recorded. Education levels of both children and parents, demographic features of parents, features of living area, usage of devices and associated impairments were filled out. Self-concept was measured using Piers–Harris Self-concept (PH) Scale. Quality of life was measured by Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory 4.0 (PedsQL). The physical and psychosocial health subscale scores of PedsQL (P-PedsQL and PS-PedsQL) were recorded. Results. Significant differences in mean scores favouring the control group were found for PH scale, PedsQL scale (p < 0.001). P-PedsQL and PS-PedsQL of the CP group were lower than the control group (p < 0.001). PS-PedsQL report was significant predictor of self-concept. The presence of incontinence and GMFCS level were significant predictors of PedsQL and PPedsQL, respectively. Conclusion. Self-concept and QOL of the CP children were lower than the children without CP. Presence of incontinence, self-concept rating and GMFCS level were important to predict domains of QOL.

The aim of this study was to examine risk factors related to cyber bullying and victimization. The study was carried out with 160 adolescents applying to the Child/Adolescent Psychiatry Outpatient Clinic of the Faculty of Medicine of Suleyman Demirel University in Isparta, Turkey. Data was collected through using the Socio-Demographic Information Form, Internet Addiction Scale, and Cyber Victim and Bullying Scale. The results of the study showed that cyber bullying was related to gender, the risk of Internet addiction, the frequency of visiting Internet cafes, adolescents’ perception of their mothers’ Internet skills, the daily duration of visiting social networking sites, usage of the Internet predominantly to play online games, the monthly income of the family, and the mothers’ educational status. Cyber victimization, on the other hand, was found to be related to the risk of Internet addiction, the frequency of visiting Internet cafes, adolescents’ perception of their mothers’ Internet skills, and usage of the Internet predominantly to play online games. The results of the study were discussed in the light of relevant literature.

Menstrual psychosis: a case report -

Evrim Aktepe; Emel Özen; Funda Özyay Eroğlu

Menstrual psychosis (MP) is not a distinct title within the current standard psychiatric classification. Most of the literature on this disorder is based on case reports. Due to its unique clinical symptoms, MP differs from other disorders that come with psychotic symptoms. It has been reported that controlled studies utilizing large samples as well as long-term monitoring are required for the treatment of MP cases. This study presents the case of a female adolescent with MP involving affective and psychotic findings, and it attempts to raise awareness regarding this rare disorder.

Pathological Fire Setting Behavior in Children and Adolescents

Fatmagül Helvacı Çelik; Evrim Aktepe; Orhan Kocaman

Pathological fire setting behavior is characterized by various types of fire setting behavior that lasts at least 6 months. This behavior can be observed both during childhood and adolescence and it develops as a result of the complex interaction between individual, social and environmental factors. Sample population based studies show that fire setting behavior occurs in children and adolescents by 5-10%. The studies that have been conducted have yielded to various theories and findings concerning the mechanism of occurrence of pathological fire setting behavior, the factors that affect this behavior and the demographic, individual, family and environmental characteristics of the children and adolescents who engage in such behavior. The objectives of effective treatment strategies are reducing fire setting behavior as well as making significant changes in the causes underlying the psychopathology. Outpatient care is the preferred method. In addition, there are some inpatient treatment programs designed especially for young people who set fires. The two most common approaches in intervention concerning fire setting behavior are firefighting (fire service) based training interventions and mental health based psycho-social interventions. Even though numerous studies have been conducted in the world concerning pathological fire setting behavior from the 19th century onwards, no epidemiological data or study on pathological fire setting behavior exists in Turkey. This seems to be the case in our country despite the fact that fire setting behavior at various degrees and even arson occurs in children and adolescents and results in material damage as well as serious injury and even death especially in the context of children who are pushed into crime. Our objective is to discuss pathological fire setting behavior in line with the literature on the subject, to increase the awareness of the fire service institutions and to shed light on further studies to be conducted on this issue.

AIM: The aim of the present study is to inquire into the evaluation and monitoring processes of the psychiatry consultations requested within the period of 4 years and 3 months in Suleyman Demirel University (SDU) Medical Faculty Children-Adolescent Mental Health and Disorders Department. METHOD: In-patients and out-patients monitored by the clinics of SDU Medical Faculty between 20 March 2008 - 04 June 2012 for whom psychiatry consultation is requested are included in the study. The requested consultations are evaluated retrospectively in this study. Data concerning which units the consultations have been requested from, the medical diagnoses of the patients, reasons for the consultation request, psychiatric diagnoses and treatments, and the monitoring processes and demographic characteristics are evaluated. RESULTS: The 71.4% of the cases are females (n:40) and the 28.6% are males (n:16). There are 56 cases that consist of children and adolescents. The 66.1% of the cases are in-patients and 33.9% are out-patients. The most frequent medical diagnosis is acute physical complaints (48.2%), and the most frequently observed reasons for consultation requests are suicide attempts (41.1%) and depressive symptoms (12.5%). It has been observed that among the patients for whom monitoring is advised, 66% have not attended to their monitoring sessions. CONCLUSION: It is important that child care physicians and mental health professionals to work in cooperation for the consultation process to function properly. It has been observed that most of the cases for whom monitoring is advised have not attended to their monitoring sessions and were not able to complete their treatments. It seems proper to inform the families about this matter and to take the necessary measures in the child psychiatry clinics where monitoring is to be conducted.
