The analysis of successors’ competencies in family enterprises with the use of grey system theory

Rafał Mierzwiak; Ewa Więcek-Janka

Purpose – The purpose of the paper is to analyse the relationships between the competency structure of the successors of family enterprises in Poland and dimensions like gender, self-awareness of development, taking their ideas into consideration in shaping the strategy of the firm and the size of the firm. Design/methodology/approach – Grey relational analysis was employed to analyse the empirical material in the paper. The results of the analysis served a more thorough qualitative analysis of the subject of the family enterprise successors’ competencies by comparing them to theoretical assumptions and other research within this scope. Findings – In the paper, the relation was shown between the structure of family firm successors’ competencies and the variables such as gender, development self-awareness, taking their ideas into consideration in shaping the strategy of the firm and the size of the firm. Research limitations/implications – The research was conducted in Poland and therefore its generalisati...

Application of the Grey Clustering Analysis Method in the Process of Taking Purchasing Decisions in the Welding Industry

Rafał Mierzwiak; Ewa Więcek-Janka

The publication presents the results of analyses developed for supporting the process of purchasing materials in the manufacturing process in the welding industry. The principal research problem in the article was to select a minimum number of features essential in taking decisions related to purchasing fluxes for welding processes carried out using the SAW method. To this end, the Clusters of Grey Incidence procedure, developed as part of Grey System Theory, was used.

Improvement of Interactive Products Based on an Algorithm Minimizing Information Gap

Ewa Więcek-Janka; Małgorzata Sławińska

This paper feature results of scientific research that is associated with the improvement of interaction conditions of interactive products. Efficiency of use of these products remains in close correlation with efficient performance of decision making processes. Available information resources assist the user in the effective use of electronic devices only when, at the same time, mechanisms of adaptation of information to the real needs and learning capabilities of the individual user in the information environment are being designed. This multi-dimensional space in which cognitive processes are carried out, in regard to processing and transferring information, is nowadays characterized by excessive amounts of information, also called information noise. However, in the use of interactive products, the common phenomenon of the so-called information gap, which is the difference between relevant information and the collection of information became available in the system. The result of designing interactive products targeted at eliminating this discrepancy is that the user achieve goals with satisfaction, in less time and without frustration and anxiety, which would otherwise occur as a result of emotional and cognitive dissonance.

The Analysis of Barriers in Succession Processes of Family Business with the Use of Grey Incidence Analysis (Polish Perspective)

Ewa Więcek-Janka; Rafał Mierzwiak; Joanna Kijewska

Abstract The article presents results of research on the identification and evaluation of barriers faced by successors in family businesses during the first process of succession. The analysis of empirical material used grey systems theory, which was considered as an equivalent for the analysis of small samples and qualitative research. While conducting the literature review and empirical study, the authors concentrated on (a) the identification of barriers in the development of family firms and (b) eliciting the perspective of the new generation of owners in family firms entering the succession process through an empirical analysis of the assessed level of risk in relationships with family and business.
