We demonstrated a novel application of a FOPA, i.e. the operation of a hybrid pre-amplifier built with a single-pump FOPA as a second stage of an EDFA pre-amplifier and its application on a 40-Gb/s system.

We experimentally demonstrated, for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, a two-pump fiber optical parametric amplifier having /spl sim/26 dB on-off gain with /spl plusmn/1.5 dB ripple over 30 nm bandwidth.

We analyze crosstalk in two-pump fiber optical parametric amplifiers (2P-FOPAs) with 13 WDM signal channels in two situations. In the first case, we simulate an in-line amplifier with moderate output powers (/spl sim/ 0 dBm). We show that for a fixed gain, crosstalk can be reduced using a shorter fiber and larger pump power. In the second case, we simulate a preamplifier with low output power (/spl sim/ -15 dBm). Our results indicate that 2P-FOPA are good devices as preamplifiers but rather limited for in-line amplification.

We investigate Q penalties in FOPAs arising from variations of the parametric gain originated by pump phase modulation. We show that these penalties are strongly reduced in fibers with large variations of the zero dispersion wavelength (lambda0)

The performance of five WDM modulated channels amplified with a double-pumped fiber optic parametric amplifier is experimentally analysed. We observe that crosstalk between channels diminishes when the amplifier is designed with a shorter fiber.

We experimentally analyze amplification performance of a two channel WDM system within a single-pumped fiber optic parametric amplifier. We show that fluctuations of the zero dispersion wavelength enhances spurious four wave mixing generation and crosstalk.
